Breaking Out

I looked over at the chair and was startled to see Dave looking back at me.

“Hi, Marlin. Sorry if I gave you a start. Lindsay showed up an hour ago, but you were asleep. She picked up Kari and took her back so that she could get her car and some fresh clothes. Said they would be back in a few hours.”

“Dave, I want to be out of here in a few hours. What time is it?”

“A little after ten a.m. Don’t count on them letting you out of here today, that was a bad concussion. Had one like it once. Took a few days until everything was right again.”

I knew Dave was former military. I didn’t ask, but I was willing to bet that his concussion didn’t happen on this side of the world. And I didn’t have a few days, I was going to be at my uncle’s funeral if I had to go there still wearing a hospital gown.

The doctor came in a few minutes later, and repeated pretty much verbatim what Dave had said, minus the part about having had a concussion himself. I told him that I might stay one more night, but I’d be gone by breakfast in the morning. He gave me a “we’ll see” look, and I gave him my best “don’t screw with me” look. I really don’t have one of those, so it was mediocre at best. But one way or another, I was leaving tomorrow at the latest. Dave gave me an amused look after the doctor left.

“This isn’t funny, Dave.”

“You being hurt isn’t funny, Marlin. You telling the doctor what to do, now that’s funny.”

“I’m serious. I have a funeral to go to on Monday.”

“I know you do, Rikki already told me to make sure I had a black suit ready, because I’m going with you. But in the meantime, please do what they say and rest. I’m here to protect you, and that includes protecting you from yourself if I have to.”
