But Sudama was tired after his long journey, and decided to rest before starting back. He worried about what he would tell Padmini. How disappointed she would be, for she had placed a great deal of hope in this meeting.

He lay down under a tree, his heart heavy and hopeless within him, and fell into a deep and leaden slumber. He dreamt about a day long ago when, on the banks of the Jamuna, Krishna had plunged into the river to do battle with the terrible serpent, Kaliya, who was devastating the village, swallowing the cattle, and keeping the girls from bathing. Krishna climbed a tree above the river and dove in. The splash roiled the waters and awoke Kaliya, slumbering in the depths after a heavy meal of two cows and a goat. The creature's huge body undulated towards Krishna, hood fanned, fangs ready to inject their poison into the intruder. And though Krishna struggled against him, Kaliya was very powerful, and overcame him.
