I KNOW KUNG FU

“Everybody was kung fu fighting! … It was an ancient Chinese art, and everybody knew their part.”1 Every kid growing up in the seventies feared the boy who knew karate. The answer to every chest-bumping conflict was, “Okay, show me your kung fu.” Once, when my friend and I were walking down a back alley in our neighborhood, another kid leapt out at us and threw down an exaggerated Bruce Lee pose. With eyes bugging out and body so contorted that it reduced his size in half, he challenged, “I know kung fu! You think I don’t?”

My buddy said no and opened up a can-o-whuppin’ on him until he cried. Lesson learned: talking karate isn’t the same as chopping karate. (Never mind that white kids in the seventies didn’t know the difference between karate and kung fu.)

So far we’ve talked up some kung fu, but you need to see how the apostolic network works before you know how your team is meant to function. After spending the last few chapters showing you “Wax on. Wax off,” “Sand the floor,” and “Paint the fence,” it’s time to honor Mr. Miyagi and show you some karate. The best way to do that is to watch the apostles as they roundhouse through the book of Acts, while also observing Paul as he makes flying-kick comments throughout his epistles. Wanna see them bring it?

WHERE’S WALDO?

In The Karate Kid, Miyagi takes Daniel-san to the Cobra Kai dojo. That scene brilliantly illustrates that the philosophy and training of the Cobra Kai are in direct opposition to what Miyagi has been teaching. After challenging the entire dojo in the competition at Daniel-san’s expense, Miyagi tells him, “Miyagi just save you beating for one month.” Our lack of understanding of the Ephesians 4 model has affected our outcomes personally, structurally, and denominationally so that we’ve been getting karate kicked all over the chain-link fence.

Sometimes you learn the most from the fight that you got your butt kicked in. Let’s just look at the areas where the enemy’s Cobra Kai have introduced the foot of instruction to the crotch of understanding: personally, structurally, and denominationally.

PERSONALLY

Leaders will become frustrated if they don’t do what they were designed for.
