Chapter 11: Water that drowns

‘Wet,’ was the first coherent thought I experienced as the portal spat me out. ‘Oh, no, I’m sinking… help! I can’t swim!’ was my next thought.

In my excitement to leap through a trans-dimensional portal to another realm I had forgotten two important things: One, I could not swim. And two, salt water was evil.

Thankfully the portal had deposited me and Philia in a region of freshwater and I sighed in relief not to be burning and itching from the presence of salt. Immediately I wrapped my steadily sinking body in a bubble of air which saved me from falling deeper into the water. Once I was no longer in danger of dropping like a rock, I took a look around at the area I had appeared in with curiosity.

Hydrum, the Elemental Plane of Water. From river water to pond water to sea water, every conceivable type of water existed within this realm. Much like how Ignatum was the place where the Concept of Fire held sway and was where the Origin of all heat and flames in the mortal worlds existed, Hydrum was the domain of the Concept of Water and source of all forms of liquid water. Not ice, though. That was Glacium’s domain.

There were significant differences between the two realms. Where Ignatum was barren and hot, Hydrum was swimming with life and pleasantly cool on my ‘skin.’ Ignatum also had a discernible sky and ground. In the fluid depths of Hydrum, up and down were subjective, and it lacked a top or bottom. Nothing but water, a few stray lumps of land, and lots of aquatic life forms existed within the Elemental Plane.

I bobbed in the water for a while, mesmerized by the sights around me. The spot the portal had dumped me was well illuminated. Somehow. There was no sun in Hydrum. No sky, either. The water was just… bright and see through as if there was a sun shining down overhead.

‘Disconcerting,’ I thought to myself as floated.

From behind me there was a loud sound, like a cough mated with a burp and produced some unholy noisy offspring. The water surged and frothed as Philia exited the portal with stately grace. It took her a few seconds to adjust to the odd sensation of weightlessness the Elemental Plane inflicted on visitors, but once she figured it out, she was swimming around like it was second nature to her. Interestingly, but not unpleasantly, Philia didn’t ‘leak’ into the water. Her body didn’t dissolve or defuse into the surroundings.

“I’d forgotten how fun this was,” she said, doing flips and loop-de-loops around me. “I so rarely get a chance to swim or fly freely. Such are the burdens of one such as myself.”

“Neat. I’m glad you’re happy and all, but how exactly am I supposed to move around?” I wondered aloud. My beautiful round shape was excellent for rolling about on land, but there was nothing for my body to grab onto in the water to allow me to move.
