Chapter 16

“I think I’m in love. It’s never happened to me before. I don’t know what to do.”

“Don, get a hold of yourself. Remember me? I’m the one you stole the girl from,” Bryce fumed.

“No, not Bridgette, I’m talking about Rita.”

“What? You went on a date with Bridgette, remember?”

“It got interrupted. I ended up spending the evening with Rita.”

“I call that a fumble.”

“No, it’s more like an inside the park home run. You try to hit it over the wall, but you don’t. Still, when all is said and done, you still have a home run.”

“Whatever, dude. I’m happy for you, really, I am, especially since that means I can try again with Bridgette.”

“Flowers and sleigh rides; she’s a sucker for flowers and sleigh rides. She didn’t get any sleigh rides in Atlanta, I’m sure.”

“Atlanta? Is that where’s she’s from?”

“Dude, you need to stop talking about yourself on dates. Get to know her. Ask her questions. People love talking about themselves. Well, maybe not as much as you do. Oh, and I wouldn’t take her to the diner on Friday nights. She hates country music. In fact, don’t take her to the diner at all. She doesn’t like the menu.”

“Good to know.”

An hour later Bryce walked into the lobby of the lodge. Lillian stood at the front desk. “Is Bridgette here?”

Bridgette stepped out of her office. “Wow, what is this?”

“I brought you some flowers.” He smiled.

Taking them, she said, “You really should have taken off the price tag. $4.99 grocery store special. You shouldn’t have.” You shouldn’t have been so cheap. She set them next to the flowers Don had given her. Bryce’s flowers were dwarfed by the large bouquet. Folding her arms, she asked, “Is there anything else I can do for you?”

“Um, no, I just wanted to bring you flowers. I guess I’ll be going now.”

Instead of getting in his car, he headed over to the coffee shop. When he walked in, Rita and Don held hands across a table.

“It didn’t work,” Bryce blurted out.

“What didn’t work?” Don asked.

“Taking her flowers didn’t work.” He sat down next to Rita. “I forgot to take the price tag off, and she wasn’t impressed by the daily special.”

Rita snorted, “You sent her the daily special?”

“No, I took them over.”

“That was worse than not giving her flowers at all. Now she thinks you’re cheap.”

“What do I do? Women are a mystery to me. I didn’t have a sister growing up and my mother was a tomboy. I don’t have a clue how to behave. I’m going to give up. It’s just too hard.”

“I think that’s a good idea. Do nothing for a couple of weeks,” Rita said. “Then you can start over from scratch.”

“What if someone steals her from me meanwhile?”

“There is no one else,” Don replied. “I’m out of the running. You’re the only contender left.”

“Thanks, guys, it’s been great talking to you. I feel better.”

Driving back to the hotel, Lionel was there to greet him. “James called. He seemed a little upset that you weren’t here.
