The aroma of coffee and bacon crept through the fog of sleep surrounding Holly. Slowly she opened her eyes. Jesse was having breakfast at a small table by the window. A covered plate sat across from him.

Almost as if he sensed her looking at him, he turned and caught her gaze. “Good morning.”

“Good morning. How did breakfast get here?”

“I had it brought up. I took the liberty of ordering for you.”

“Thanks.” She sat up, threading her hands through her hair, hoping it would fall into some semblance of order. “They were sure quiet. I didn’t hear a thing.”

Jesse took a sip of coffee. “Some chaperone you are. Half a dozen women could have snuck in and had their wicked way with me and I would have been completely at their mercy.”

Holly was sure the reason she’d been so deeply asleep was that it had been such a struggle to get to sleep in the first place. She’d been so aware of Jesse’s nearness, she was lucky to have slept at all.

Jesse set down his cup and picked up his fork. “Come and eat before it gets cold.”

Holly joined him at the table. She realized this was the first time she’d had breakfast alone with a man other than her father. Jesse was fully dressed, and they’d slept on opposite sides of the room, but the fact that she was wearing his bathrobe lent a certain intimacy to the occasion.

She lifted the cover off her plate and set it to the side. For a while they ate in silence, then Holly asked, “What are we doing today?”

“Joanna called this morning and invited you to a luncheon she’s throwing for her bridesmaids. I told her you’d let her know.”

She’d slept through the phone ringing, too! She must have been more exhausted than she’d thought. “Do you think I should go?”

“If we were actually engaged, would you want to go?”

If she and Joanna were really going to become sisters-in-law, she would welcome the chance to spend time with the other woman and her friends. “Probably.”

“Then I think you should go.”
