Chapter 8
Don’t say anything. Jamie tugged at the sleeve of Edward’s shirt in an attempt to hold him back. He could see the man itching to attack the tree and rearrange the garlands and decorations into his usual style of perfection.
The group had met in the guest lounge in order to decorate the nine-foot Christmas tree. Edward had insisted on them getting a real tree brought over to the island, one that apparently wouldn’t be leaving needles everywhere and smelled bloody good. Jamie pressed his lips in a line. He’d been around Edward far too long.
“Remember these?” Tasha said. She held two sewn-felt tree ornaments out to Lucas.
Jamie strained to see what they were.
“You kept these?” Lucas sounded amazed. He held the pair of what Jamie realized were miniature stockings up for the rest of the group to see. “We stitched them ourselves.”
“You don’t say?” Edward said softly, though Jamie recognized the Brit’s usual sarcasm bubbling below the surface.
“Well, you did yours. I got help from Mom,” Tasha said with a laugh. “Hence mine looks so amazing.” She grinned and looked at Edward. “Think they might catch on?”
Edward seemed to soften at the mention of Lucas and Tasha’s mother. He smiled and shrugged. “They’re very homely,” he said. “If that’s what you like.”
Jamie could only imagine how hard it was for Edward to watch the disorder to the way the tree was being decorated—tinsel thrown onto the branches unevenly, no sense, symmetry, or color scheme to how the ornaments were being hung.
“Left,” Edward whispered as Tasha and Lucas each hung one of the stockings on the tree. He clicked his tongue as he scratched behind his ear. Jamie looked at the tree, and sure enough on the left there was a space that needed filling. Stepping forward, Jamie eyed the remaining baubles and picked one up. It was a pale shade of green covered in glitter. Brown stained the bauble—old glue where glitter had rubbed away. He zoned in on the bare section of the tree and hung the bauble perfectly. Turning around, he met Edward’s eyes. Edward raised an eyebrow and smiled, seemingly glad that at least one person in the room got him and the art of decorating.
“That was an ugly bauble,” Edward said as Jamie rejoined him.
“Sure was,” Jamie said. He couldn’t help but smile as he felt Edward’s hand in his. “You want to do one?”
Edward had stayed away from the tree so far. He hadn’t seemed keen to contribute to the atrocity being created before them. “I’m fine,” Edward said.
“Here,” Scott said.
Jamie stared at his hands as Scott handed him a spray can of fake snow.
“These, too.” Scott handed a packet of stencils to Edward.
Edward looked like he’d just caught a whiff of dog shit. “Erm, I don’t think so.” He held his hands in a ‘can’t you see I’m wearing Gucci’ pose.
“Just crack a window. You’ll be fine.”
Edward went to complain, but Scott used his tried-and-tested Edward response of walking away before becoming embroiled in an argument he’d never win.
