* * * * *

They were never going to leave. Jacob ground his teeth together as Marlie served the final wedges of cheesecake. It hadn’t taken the Board of Directors long to fall under Marlie’s spell.

Christmas happened no matter what you had or what you ate, she’d announced when she’d presented the unorthodox meal. It wasn’t any less Christmas because they were eating lasagna and salad.

One by one, each startled board member had begun to smile and enjoy themselves. Only Natalie seemed able to resist. The men still stared at Marlie when she walked by but most of the attention had turned from lust to fatherly affection. All those sexy signals she sent seemed solely direct at him. And if they would all get the hell home, he could do something about it. During the course of dinner, Marlie had been seated four people away from him but her attention still somehow belonged to him. She flashed him teasing smiles or rolled her eyes when someone tried to be too formal.

It was like they were already lovers. And soon they would be. They were going to have sex. That was becoming more and more obvious. It was just a question of when and how. Would he be able to maintain the controlled lust that he’d tolerated over the past ten years or would he find himself digging through the back of his closet looking for a paddle to use on her pert little ass?

Marlie was an excellent hostess. She monitored the table, making sure everyone had enough to eat and plenty of napkins and that no one was trying to be too elegant.

Myron Parish and Patrick Belden, two of the stuffiest, old-fashioned businessmen Jacob had ever worked with, were waving their forks in the air as they led the singing of Christmas carols at their end of the table. Myron’s wife sat next to him, draped in a sauce-spotted apron that boldly stated “Get The Hell Out Of My Kitchen”. Marlie had found it hanging in the pantry when Mrs. Parish had despaired about the safety of her designer evening dress. She didn’t seem too worried now. Jacob watched as she filched the last bite of chocolate cheesecake off her husband’s plate.

He didn’t know why he was surprised. Marlie had had the same effect on him. Somehow getting him to do things he didn’t want to do…and then making him enjoy them.

Marlie had won everyone’s heart.

Except Natalie’s.

Natalie sat ramrod straight beside him, her arms folded across her stomach. A look of anger and distaste marred her face. She’d spoken few words, and even fewer of them were repeatable. Jacob tried to remember what he’d found attractive or interesting in Natalie but nothing came to mind. She was pretty enough, if you didn’t mind cold beauty, but she had none of Marlie’s joy and excitement.

Marlie stood up from her place at the formal dining table and reached across the table to pick up the empty salad bowl.

As she walked by him and flashed him a gentle smile.
