The multifaceted topic of pilgrimage drew much attention in the fourth through sixth centuries. Laity, religious, and clergy alike weighed in on the benefits and drawbacks of traveling to holy sites. Often such evaluations had more to do with personal grievances between leading figures, or political maneuvering between local bishops and clergy.
