CHAPTER 6
âColin, this is wonderful! The last person on earth I expected to see up here . . .â Alan Kendrick spoke excitedly, hardly able to contain the intense pleasure he felt at this long-awaited meeting. Entirely forgetting his surroundings and the other people in the bar, he gazed at Colin with almost embarrassing appraisal, absorbing every detail of his appearance with a lively and warm regard. Then, simultaneously, they both started to speakâbroke off, and laughed.
âThis calls for a drink,â said Alan. âWhat would you like? Gin and ginger ale? Right. Weâll sit down. We can talk better.â
âYes, but Iâm with somebody . . .â Colin indicated Jock.
Alan looked round and saw a dark-Âhaired man at one of the tables. He was impressed by the handsome, brooding faceâalthough at the moment it seemed to be rather grimly set. He remembered, then, seeing him at the top of the Steps with Colin. âOh. He wonât mind if I join you, will he? What does he drink?â
âWhisky,â said Colin, noticing Alanâs momentary look of disappointment at Jockâs presence. They collected the drinks and moved to the table. âJock, this is Sergeant KendrickâI mean Alan. Iâve never called you Mister Kendrick beforeâit seems funny. Jock Macmillan.â
âHope you donât mind my barging in?â Alan apologised. âOnly I havenât seen Colin for years.â
âHeâs an old friend of the family,â explained Colin.
âAye, itâs all right,â said Jock solemnly, as they shook hands.
âItâs amazing, seeing you like this.â Alan gave Colin a friendly smile. âIâve got hundreds of questions to askâitâs difficult to know where to start. What are you doing now? Are you in Edinburgh for long?â
âNo. Only this week.â
âHow are your mother and father? Are they with you?â
âNo, Iâve been away from home some timeâafter leaving art school. Iâve been designing for textilesâworking in Liverpool . . .â
âThat doesnât surprise me. I remember you used to draw and paint. Very well, too.â
âYes, you gave me a paint-Âbox. Iâve still got it.â
âGood Lord, it was ages agoâso was our last meetingâten years at least. Iâve often thought about you all. What about your sister? Laura. How is she?â
âMuch the same,â Colin said dryly. âSheâs married, with two children.â
âOh, is she? But what are you doing up here? Are you on business or something?â
âDo you live in Edinburgh now?â Colin broke in. He was not certain as to the best way of explaining things to Alan, and thought it wiser to avoid the subject.
âYes,â said Alan, âIâve got quite a good job. I was living in London for a time. Lookâyou must come and have dinner one evening. Iâd like you to meet Julia.â
âJulia? Is that yourâyour wife?â
âNo, Iâm not married or anything. Sheâs a relation of Fatherâs. Julia Douglas. A widow. I think youâd like her. Itâs a nice house, too. Across the Meadows, behind the Royal Infirmary.â
Was there any significance to that âor anything,â Colin wondered. But it was silly to jump to conclusions; it was a habit he and the others had,
