In the smoking room next to the reception room, an older man watched the commotion Tatara was causing through the window. He had silvery-gray hair and was wearing a dark red suit and tinted glasses.

“You have some rather unruly students in your school, Tsukikage-sensei,” a voice called out to the old man.

Indeed, he was none other than Tsukikage Bakuga, Japan’s prime minister and the director of Akatsuki Academy. He turned around and smiled at the newcomer.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Takizawa-kun. Long time no see.”

The person Tsukikage had called “Takizawa-kun” was Shinguuji Kurono, the current director of Hagun Academy. She shivered a little; the way Tsukikage had cordially called her by her old surname made it seem like he hadn’t changed at all from his time as a teacher—one she’d looked up to.

In an attempt to calm her nerves, Kurono pulled out a cigarette and lit it.

“It’s Shinguuji now, Sensei,” she said.

“Oh, yes, I forgot. We haven’t seen each other since your wedding. How’ve you been doing?”

“Well, thank you. I have a kid now too.”

“That’s wonderful news, truly.”

Tsukikage smiled, looking genuinely happy for Kurono. He had more wrinkles on his face now, but otherwise, he was the exact same Tsukikage she remembered. But that only served to confuse her further.

Sensei really hasn’t changed at all.

He had the same gentle voice. The same warm smile. He was, without a doubt, the Tsukikage Bakuga she’d admired. It pissed her off. If anything, this would have been easier if he’d become a different person. If he’d been openly hostile toward her, she would have known where he stood. Then she wouldn’t be tormented by the question of why.

Why are you doing this, Tsukikage-sensei?

Doing her best not to let her emotions show, Kurono said, “I...am not happy that I have to meet you again under these circumstances, Sensei.”

She glared at Tsukikage, deciding that if he wasn’t going to show any hostility, she would. Right now, she was his student no longer. She was Hagun Academy’s director. And since he’d harmed her students, he was an enemy. She couldn’t afford to show him any kindness. Nothing he said could change that, so there was no point in playing nice and making small talk. As things were, what mattered was finding out why he was doing this. Kurono understood that, and she decided to act accordingly. While she didn’t know where Tsukikage stood on this issue, she knew where she did, and she was making that clear.

“Heh. I suppose I can’t blame you for being angry. I did make a mess of your school, after all,” Tsukikage said, accepting her accusatory glare. He was admitting that what he’d done was an act of aggression against her.

Kurono stepped forward, closing the gap between them.

“Why did you do it?” she asked.

“Like I said during the press conference, Blazers are the linchpin of a nation’s defense. But right now, Japan entrusts the training of those Blazers to an outside organization. The Federation is also what decides which Blazers are allowed to be knights and which aren’t.
