Reba had set her alarm for six, which would give John the chance to get home and then into work on time. She’d woken in his arms at five, and they’d welcomed in the dawn together before John dressed and went downstairs, grabbing his car keys as Reba handed him a cup of coffee.

‘Have a great day.’ He kissed her, seeming suddenly more distant. Hurrying away maybe, from something that he’d decided couldn’t happen again. Reba had had her share of short-lived romances, which had drifted into oblivion as a succession of partners had realised that her music and her career pushed them into third place on her list of priorities. But she’d never had a one-night stand before, and she wasn’t sure how to behave. Wasn’t sure how to even ask if this really was a one-night stand.

She’d never had sex like this before either. And this was something that she wanted to keep.

‘You too.’ She took the cup from his hand, sipping the coffee. As if that could keep him here for a moment longer. ‘I guess...maybe we can manage not to argue when we see each other again at work?’

His eyes softened suddenly. ‘Last night wasn’t a mediation exercise. Not for me, anyway. It was something that I wanted very much, and loved every moment of.’

Good... Good. Maybe she could ask...

‘I loved it too, John.’

He nodded, taking his coffee back. They were standing in the hall, staring at each other like a couple of awkward teenagers who hadn’t yet learned how to ask whether a parting was a goodbye or a see you later. Last night, desire had seemed a wonderful and all-encompassing thing, but this morning it was confusing.

‘I want to ask... But I don’t want to make this all about when I’m free, that’s not fair to you.’

Reba caught her breath. John felt the same way she did, and his hesitancy was a matter of respect, not taking it for granted that she’d be able to fit in with his responsibilities, or that she’d even want to.

‘Ask. Please ask.’

He smiled. ‘My parents have taken Rosalie on a mid-week break in the Lake District, and they’ll be back on Friday. I don’t suppose you have tonight or tomorrow evening free?’

‘I have a private client tonight, but I’m free on Thursday.’

‘Yeah?’ He smiled suddenly. ‘If you’d like to come to my place, I can cook for you.’

‘That would be nice, thank you. We can pretend it’s not all about amazing sex...’ Reba pressed her lips together. That hadn’t been quite what she’d meant to say. ‘I didn’t mean to imply that last night was all about the sex.’

‘I know. It wasn’t for me either.’ He put his coffee and keys down on the stairs, and took her in his arms. ‘Although the sex was...really amazing.’

She could let him go now. They knew where they stood, even if it wasn’t particularly easy ground for either of them. If they just kept talking, they could work it out.
