Twenty

By the time she’d fought traffic to get back to Lincoln Park, Katherine was pissed.

Todd wasn’t answering his cell or the office line, and she needed him to help her strategize. If he were out getting a coffee, she would kill him. She couldn’t just walk away from the condo project. It would bankrupt her and maybe one or two of her investors too. She had to fight.

The brakes squealed when she slammed the Jag into her parking spot behind the house. She rushed through the side yard, heading for the office entrance around the front. When she reached for the doorknob and saw the door was cracked open, she knew something was wrong.

She carefully pushed the door wide and felt the blood drain from her face. Her purse slipped from her fingers, crashing to the floor. The office was destroyed. Desks overturned, paper everywhere, curtains ripped off the walls, and the scale model of the condo building smashed.

“Todd? Todd! Oh, my God! Todd, where are you?”

She was frantic. She stumbled over the debris between the front door and her office in the back. He had to be okay. He was more than her employee—Todd was the best friend she’d ever had. Tears were already running down her face.

When she opened the door to her office, Todd was lying on the ground, curled up in the fetal position. Blood pooled under his head. His nose looked broken, and a vicious gash over his eyebrow was still bleeding. She dropped to her knees, feeling for a pulse. Thank God.

She crawled to the portable office phone lying on the ground next to her smashed desk chair. Her hands shook as she dialed 911.

The 911 operator that answered her call was steady and calm. It helped her pull herself together. She worked through the basic check of Todd’s vital signs that the operator requested and answered the man’s questions about the break-in. Soon he dispatched Chicago police and an ambulance.

Todd was still unconscious, but his breathing was good and pulse strong. She thought those were good signs. The operator kept her talking. She knew he was trying to keep her calm, and she was thankful for the distraction.

She scanned the wrecked room, her eyes stopping on her desk. There was something sticking up from the top. She got up from Todd’s side to go take a look. Stabbed into the center was a large black-handled knife. The blade tacked a sheet of paper to the desktop, a single word written on it in big ugly block letters: SELL.

They did this. They did this to Todd while she was at the Senator’s office. Roberts was in on it—he’d kept her waiting so his goons could do this. She fought back the urge to vomit.

“Katherine, can you answer me?” the operator asked.

“I, yeah. I’m sorry. How long until the police get here?” Her voice shook with fear.

“Just a few more minutes, you’re doing great. You got this. How’s Todd?”

She knelt next to him, running through the simple exam again, cradling his limp hand.
