HOW EXERCISE ENHANCES VITALITY

It’s a mood lifter. The power of physical activity to trigger chemicals associated with state of mind, pleasure, and pain reduction has put exercise on the list of remedies for depression. Study after study has found that not only does exercise relieve symptoms of depression, it also helps prevent them from reoccurring.

It sharpens thinking. A session on the elliptical isn’t going to turn you into Albert Einstein, but it can help you stay on the ball and fight off the effects of aging. For years now, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been studying what happens to the brains of older people when they participate in a regular walking program. And in each of the many studies, researchers found improvement. Take the 2010 one where they looked at the brains of people ages fifty-nine to eighty with high-resolution brain imaging after a year of walking. The result? The exercisers had increased brain connectivity and improved scores on cognitive tests. There’s proof, too, that you can benefit even if you’re not at the age when brain function begins to be a worry. Reviewing studies on exercise and cognition in young adults, New Zealand researchers concluded that regular workouts improve executive functioning—the ability to organize, strategize, pay attention, and remember details.
