HARRISON

The last few days had gone okay. Status quo. She did her job, and I did mine. And I hated every minute of it. I took advantage of every opportunity I could to be near her, around her, just in the same room, but it wasn’t enough. She’d been here long enough that the crew was all on her side. I was the outsider that they hadn’t let in. And as long as she put distance between us, the guys would, too. But I didn’t really care about making friends with the researchers in the labs; that never served a manager well; however, I did want to be around Candy, and that wasn’t happening. I’d never had a woman refuse my advances or even try to distance themselves from me. It was always me dropping them. Not once have I had to chase a woman. In any other circumstances, I would have been all over her. She just needed time with me to let her guard down. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go in with guns blazing. I really liked this girl and wasn’t interested in a pump and dump. I wanted something better.

The memories of Candy naked had plagued my thoughts since that night. When I think about it hard enough, I can almost feel her warm, soft skin under mine, and I wonder if she even knows what she does to me. I found myself wandering the halls and making frequent trips to the restroom, stealing peeks of her at her desk while I walked. There was something about seeing her working with her glasses on and her long, dark hair up in a messy bun. The locks that escaped the tie framed her face like a picture. She blew at the erratic hairs that continually defied her. It took everything I had not to walk up to her and tuck that stray strand behind her ear and kiss her forehead.

Standing at the observation window with my hands in my pockets, I watched as Candy stood. Lord only knew how long she’d been hovering over a microscope by the time she finally got up. She straightened her spine and stretched, making her body contort in ways that had my imagination working double time. It was tough to spend hours upon hours in a lab, and I knew from firsthand experience just how badly a person could need a rub down afterward. Unfortunately, she didn’t stand there long enough for me to admire her, and she began to make her way across the lab. I had to admit—even though I was jealous—she had a way with the guys in the building. It wasn’t sexual, yet she could have made it that way. She didn’t use her good looks or tight body to her advantage. These guys might have started out lusting after her, but now they all genuinely cared for her. Candy talked to each one as she passed, and her lips lifted into a delicious grin. Her eyes caught mine through the window, and now, I had to move on or risk looking like a predator.
