16. Consider how you could better show love to those around you this week.

I open chapter 11 by writing about a mother who brought her young daughter to a conference to meet me. She introduced her by saying, “She has a background like yours”—which I immediately understood to mean a background of abuse.

It was one of those moments when you know you’d better choose your words with utmost care. She needed to know that she mattered. That her pain mattered. That there was hope for her. That she wasn’t just meant to survive but to thrive.

So I cupped her face in my hands. “Oh, my goodness,” I said. “I am so sorry. But do you know what that means?”

She shook her head.

“That means you get to learn how to be strong in Jesus in a way lots of other people won’t. You get to learn who you are in Him and how precious you are to Him, because people like you and me must, in order to have healthy, happy hearts. We get to know Jesus the way some people never bother knowing Him. Somebody very wrong made us feel really small, but now we get to learn how to stand really, really tall.”
