Bailey

After the Council voted in Kasim’s favor, things had moved quickly. Everyone was dismissed, except the families of those who had joined Wiley’s ranks. The families came up to share what they knew. All of them gave the same location, which unfortunately, wasn’t exact but at least it gave them a place to start looking—somewhere in Hudspeth County in Texas, near the New Mexico Border. The first woman who had spoken up against the Alpha said her son had mentioned Dell City, but that was the only nearby town that anyone knew of. Apparently, they were out in the middle of nowhere with similar communication restrictions as Mulberry Springs.

Speaking of, Bailey needed to call her sister and update her on everything that had happened. She’d been in town for less than a day, but so much had been going on, it felt more like a week.

“Hey, where can I go to call Bethany?” she asked, turning to Kasim after he was done talking with the last couple, two fathers who were very worried about their son. They hadn’t heard from him for a couple days already. “I don’t have any cell service here.”

“Do you care if the conversation is recorded?” he asked. “If not, you can use any of the landlines here, but if you don’t want my Gram listening in, you’ll have to wait till we can get out of town for a bit.”

Bailey blinked. “Seriously?”

What. The. Hell. And yet, why was she surprised?

Kasim gave her a lopsided smile as he escorted her out of the building.

“Yes. That’s why I only called Steele from my phone.”

“That’s so fucked up. This place really is kind of a cult.” Of course, the timing of their walk made it so she was calling Mulberry Springs a cult right when Kasim opened the door to the outside, and his mom and grandmother were standing right there. Bailey managed a weak smile, bringing her hand up in a little wave.

“Uh, hi.”

His grandmother glared. His mom stepped forward with a smile, holding out her hand. Behind them, Kasim’s dad was standing silently. Bailey wondered if he ever talked.

“Bailey, it’s so nice to officially meet you,” she said sincerely. Hopefully, she wasn’t going to hold the cult comment against Bailey. “I’m Janelle, this is my husband, Michael, and my mother, Sylvie.”

Huh. That meant Kasim’s sister, Sylvia, was probably named for her grandmother, poor thing. Not that Bailey was going to say that out loud. Her bunny’s amusement would have to be enough for her.

Joining the Lencho ladies on the steps in front of the building, Bailey shook Janelle’s hand. Kasim’s hand pressed against her lower back in reassuring support. Her bunny sent a little surge of support, too, even though it didn’t understand why she was nervous. As far as it was concerned, she and Kasim had accepted each other, and that was that.

“It’s nice to meet you, too,” she said, feeling incredibly awkward. “Sorry about the um, cult comparison. I was making a joke.”

“No, you
