Chapter 38

Los Angeles Times crime reporter Rita Sowell was standing at the back of the open ambulance doors. She watched the circus scene with the eyes of a reporter. Instead of digging deep to find her daily story, she became a major part of it. Her mind had already been churning the words together that would make a sensational front-page story. She couldn’t wait to get to her laptop, office computer, or even a pencil and paper. She had nearly died at the hands of a maniac an hour before. She was vibrating from the adrenaline surge. She had never been this thankful to be alive.

It was a shock to the system when Nolan Windell had called earlier in the evening and disclosed Hannah Jane Hillcrest’s abduction. She agreed to meet at the bar and discuss the bombshell topic. Now Nolan tossed her another humongous story at the moment of his death. These were her big headlines. These would be her breaking stories she had patiently been waiting for, and it all fell right into her lap. So far, she only knew minor facts about tonight’s entire mess. Of course, the relentless reporter in her knew that in only a short while, she’d have all the significant dirt on Nolan’s mental instability.

The local police were here, but they knew little more than she did. The actual information would have to come from the two FBI agents who had stopped Nolan from cutting her throat.

The thing intriguing her most was that these guys had followed her and Nolan to this out-of-the-way retreat. Evidently, Nolan had done something big enough to warrant the FBI’s attention and pick up a secret tail following them out here.

What struck her as odd about Nolan was that it seemed as if he had some level of multiple personality disorder. At the bar, he’d been charismatic. On the drive to the secluded house, he’d been jovial and levelheaded. However, in only a matter of minutes from when they’d stepped through the front door, his personality switched into something she never expected. Insanity like that was something she only saw in the movies or wrote about in her daily column. She never suspected she’d become a central character in one of her crime stories.

These FBI guys probably had the dirt on the self-proclaimed Angel of Death whom Nolan referenced in their conversations. One way or another, Rita was going to drive the information out of these guys.

A few people were busy tending to Nolan’s body. Another crew worked on right-siding his vehicle to tow it from the ditch. An even larger force was back at the house of horrors, searching for whatever incriminating things they could find on Nolan. Rita knew they wouldn’t uncover anything. Nolan had told her on the car ride that the country house belonged to Hannah Jane. Nolan said he’d give her a chance to peek inside Hannah Jane’s private life for added authenticity for when she’d write the headline exclusive.

Rita moved to the driver’s door of the ambulance and peered in the mirror.
