Chapter Sixteen

Had he actually called her a disgruntled goddess? Yeah, no. She was a freaking muse, one that didn’t even want to be down on Earth with him in the first place. Especially now that she’d found out he wasn’t taking this Mission: Totally Possible of his more seriously. Did he not realize that he’d almost ruined the entire operation? And did he think dressing her up like a doll for his amusement was funny?

There had been some expensive toiletries, and even more expensive designer clothes in the bag, though.

She shook her head, frustrated at herself for even thinking such a thought. She’d much rather be back on Mount Olympus being ordered around, or maybe experiencing those hot pokers to the eyes. Anything would be better than playing second fiddle to a nymph.

But she’d opened her big mouth and gotten herself into this mess, and now she was stuck trying to make the bed she’d made for herself somehow more comfortable to lie in.

She flung the now empty bag onto the bed and looked around. Not the best, but not the worst. Hopefully, once they located the target they wouldn’t be here that long. Oklahoma was a decent sized area to search, but since Callie had pretty much pinpointed what’s-her-face’s location, in theory, it shouldn’t take them all that long to find her.

“Almighty Zeus,” she muttered, knowing her prayer would most likely go unheard. “Please have mercy and let us find that lowly nymph ASAP.”

The moment the words left her mouth, she cringed. Calling the nymph lowly was a low blow. It wasn’t the nymph’s fault she had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and things always happened for a reason, didn’t they? Maybe this whole thing was the kick in the laurel wreath Callie needed to get on with her life.

If Daphne had stayed a tree, things would have carried on business as usual. Apollo would have continued to visit the Sacred Forest every day, and Callie would have woken up and gone to work thinking there’d be a snowball’s chance in Hades’ Realm that she and Apollo would actually end up together.

And she wouldn’t be here now, having to admit that her sister was right.

With a heavy sigh, she decided seeing the glass as half full was the better option. Seeing it half empty was making her supremely grouchy, and she didn’t like this pessimistic side of her. At all. “Sweet Persephone, rescue me from this mess,” she amended her prayer as she dug her journal out from beneath the pile of designer clothes.

She busied her hands by putting the clothes back into the bag, but her mind insisted on ruminating over the depressing thoughts clambering around in her head. The possibility of Daphne seeing the light was much greater than it had been when she had branches for limbs, and gods only knew, Apollo always got what he wanted. Which, if she stopped and thought about it, wasn’t saying much as far as she was concerned.
