Chapter 43

Valentina

It’s been a few days since my procedure, and I feel much better. Occasionally, some cramps torment me, but I’m taking painkillers and the excitement of the day makes the ache a distant sensation. Today is my first free practice session in Formula One. It’s also the day Leonard decided to tell me that he convinced three more investors to become part of our project, so it’s difficult for me not to bounce up and down in my seat a little.

Lorenzo announced I will be taking Gabriel’s session, and my boyfriend has been standing beside me the entire time, chatting with Scarlette, my race engineer in training, and some of the other mechanics. The helmet he got me is perfectly snug on my head, and I can hear his voice through the headset in my ear. The balaclava digs into my skin, but I love it too much to care. The marks I’ll be sporting afterward for a little will make my chest swell with pride. Because I made it. I’m in a Formula One car. Reserve driving for the most prestigious team in the sport. I’ve fought hard to earn the team’s respect, and I got it. Every single person I’ve met here treats me like they would any other reserve driver.

“Take a deep breath,” Gabriel’s voice comes through my earpiece, and I do as I’m told. It settles my nerves and reminds me of what Leonard told me a few months ago.

“If your biggest struggle is how nervous you get, you’ll be fine. You may not be able to overcome it, but you can use your breath to ease the effects. Deep breaths will slow your heart rate, allow your mind to focus on something else, and bring much-needed oxygen to your brain.”

“It’s free practice, so enjoy the car. Take the pressure off yourself. Have fun,” my boyfriend says, and I can’t help but smile. He sounds so serious even though he’s telling me to take things easy. I think he’s nervous and excited for me, too.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be careful with your precious baby,” I tease, patting the steering wheel of his car while looking up at him. Gabriel frowns as he squats beside me, grabbing my helmet where the clasp rests against my chin.

“You better because I have no idea what I’d do if something happened to you,” he replies, placing a kiss on the helmet where my mouth would be.

“I’m sorry I stole your session,” I say after he leans back again, but Gabriel shakes my head from side to side.

“Don’t be. I’d give you all of my sessions if I could.” And I don’t doubt it.

Gabriel is currently leading the championship by ten points. Ten points is nothing in this sport. One race could put Adrian at the top and Gabriel right into second place. Luckily, the Velocità Rossa drivers have a bit of a buffer between the Hawke and Grenzenlos drivers. I don’t know why or how, but Velocità Rossa has been dominating this season, despite Grenzenlos’ long reign, which only ended this year.
