Chapter 8

3:00 P.M., Heavy Woods

Finally on some kind of a crude path, they walked side by side, Gunner continuing to hold Camden's hand. In the near quiet Camden heard Gunner's stomach growl. He chuckled.

"Hungry?"

"Man, I am starved. I ended up not eating much at the first checkpoint. It was too soon after we had breakfast, but now I'm regretting it."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. I didn't eat much either."

"Looks like you don't eat much period."

"You been talking to Tanner? He's always saying that."

"No, I haven't, but you could stand to put some fat on those bones."

"You don't like my bones?"

Gunner laughed. "I like your bones just fine." Gunner suddenly stopped midstride, Camden taking two steps forward before realizing his arm wasn't coming with him.

Camden looked back. The look on Gunner's face was enough to send an uncomfortable shiver through Camden's body. "What's wrong?"

Gunner quickly put a finger to his lips and Camden shut up. In the silence that followed, he heard it. Noise in the woods. Noise that was becoming louder, getting closer. Gunner tightened the grip he had on Camden's hand and leaped forward. Suddenly they were running, jumping over logs and dodging trees. Branches whipped Camden in the face even though he tried to move them out of the way. Gunner was moving too fast for him to negotiate them completely, but he knew better than to ask for them to slow down. It was obvious to him that somebody or somebodies were right behind them and had surprised Gunner. Camden thought that was probably a very difficult thing to do.

They reached the main path, but instead of taking it, Gunner forced them to run right over it and back into the heavily wooded forest.

"Gunner! Crap, Gunner!"

Finally Gunner slowed his pace. "What?"

"I can't...I'm going to die!"

Gunner allowed them to stop, but his eyes remained on the woods behind them. "You're going to die?"

"Fuck, Gunner! My lungs, man. Can't fucking breathe." Camden bent over and put his hands on his knees and tried to catch his breath. He heard Gunner chuckle.

"Sorry. Forgot you're just a civilian. But that asshole who was on our tail actually sneaked up on us. I didn't hear him until it was almost too late." He huffed.

"Didn't sound like he was sneaking to me. Damn, Gunner! What are you expecting? Him to shoot us?"

Gunner finally looked at him as Camden straightened back up. "No. But I really didn't feel like having to fight for your honor."

"My what?"

The smile Gunner gave him made Camden's heart flutter. "Forgive me for being possessive. You're my prisoner. I don't plan on handing you off to anyone else."

Camden swallowed hard. "What makes you think they were after me?"

Gunner huffed. "Think they could take me?"

"Mighty confident, aren't you?"

Gunner chuckled. "Ready?"

"For what?"

"That idiot is still behind us, catching up as we speak. We need to get going."

"Crap. All right, fine. But we can't flat-out run like that because you're going to kill your prisoner."

Gunner didn't answer. Instead he looked around as if he were trying to figure something out.
