CHAPTER FIFTEEN

It only took twenty seconds when Idina woke the next morning for Reggie’s email to rush back to her all at once. The knot in her gut returned with it, tightening even more when she got out of bed and rifled through her civilian clothes to pick an outfit for the day. She didn’t look at Crimshaw’s bunk until she was fully dressed and ready to leave the bay for breakfast. When she did, the other woman’s bunk was empty, crisply made, and the bay was empty.

Right. Dumb of me to assume she’d give herself a break on the weekends when we don’t technically have to be anywhere. At least we don’t have to wade through the awkwardness after last night. Unless she went off to talk to Major Hines or some other officer about what she saw…

Idina shook her head, stuffed her feet into her sneakers, and grabbed her jacket. “Not gonna happen, Moorfield. Brush it off. Move on with your day.”

The new affirmation knocked her a little more out of her uncertainty, and she walked briskly across the bay to start her weekend of not training and not freaking out about her abilities. At least, that was the plan.

By the time she’d finished breakfast in the dining facility and had decided she’d spend the day working on a few new sketches to clear her mind, she’d forgotten all about Greenburg’s overeager promise to “loosen her up” for jump week.

He hadn’t.

“Moorfield!”

Idina spun in the hallway to see him striding toward her with a wide grin and his arms spread.

“Where are you going, huh?”

“Back to the bay…”

“Nice try. I told you we were gonna do something fun, and I keep my promises.”

Shit. He’s serious about this.

“I’m good, Greenburg.” Idina shook her head and started to turn back down the hall toward the women’s bay. “I think I’m gonna—”

“What?” He skirted around her and blocked her from going anywhere else. “Gonna sit around and pretend you don’t need to cut loose a little? Come on. That’s bullshit, and you know it.”

“It’s not.” Despite being caught off-guard like this and physically blocked from going where she wanted, she snorted. “I appreciate the effort, though.”

“Good.” Greenburg cocked his head and looked her up and down. “It’s a hell of a lot more effort than I thought I’d need to get you to come with me. And I don’t put in an effort for free.”

“Um…”

“I mean you’re coming with me.” Just then realizing how close he stood in front of her, he took two steps back and glanced behind her down the hall. “That’s the only payment. Plus the price of entry.”

“To what?”

“That’s part of the effort, Moorfield. Now shut up, turn around, and have fun, dammit!”

Idina laughed and pointed in the direction she wanted to go. “Thanks, Drill Sergeant. But I have a date with my—”

“Paper and charcoal?” Greenburg smirked. “Yeah, I pay attention. No, your date’s off. The stylus is gonna have to suck it, ’cause you’re coming with me. Let’s go.
