Back on the Road

At the same time, the welcome wagon at the ranch had pulled away from the Manson Family, which returned to its natural state of itinerancy. One impetus was a growing conflict with a ranch cowboy, a Massachusetts native named Donald Shea who had moved to L.A. after a stint in the Air Force in the 1950s, aiming to work in western movies. He drove a truck emblazoned with his name and occupation: “FAMOUS MOVIE AND TV STUNTMAN.” (Fromme shivved him in her book, quipping he was “stellar in his own mind.”) His specialties were straight out of the western scriptwriter’s narrative playbook: the gallows drop and death falls, neck drags and foot drags from moving horses. But his film employment, always meager, dwindled further with the declining popularity of western shoot-’em-ups. Shea was an imposing man—beefy and more than a foot taller than Manson at 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m), which gave him the ironic nickname of Shorty. He didn’t trust the Family in general and Manson in particular, seeing him as a lazy, freeloading, con man. And he shared his opinion freely with George Spahn.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Spahn grew ornery with the Manson women, complaining that trail-riding customers were being scared away by the hippie “bums” wandering the ranch. Late in 1968, he told them to hitch up their bus and get along.
