Conner

Orion, Connor’s Sergeant at Arms, was standing over a map of the Catskill forest and the surrounding land. “We meet them in the field. We impede them, we harass them, and we cut away their numbers until there are none left.”

The night was cold, the air crisp. That was how Connor liked it. Sure, they could have their meeting inside next to a roaring fire, thick rugs underfoot, but this was where the fighting would happen, under the open sky, between the trees.

Torches were lit all around them, casting weird shadows into the forest before fading altogether. Connor was with his war council planning for the attack they all knew was coming. His council was made up of himself, Orion, Laren, Morgan, and Lu, the only one of their party missing.

With every day that passed Connor found himself more and more vexed over Lu’s absence. As the weeks turned into months the chances of something serious happening to Lu grew. While it was difficult to imagine a scenario which Lu couldn’t handle, the Elite wasn’t immortal. Connor ignored these thoughts when speaking to his wife. Laren was adamant her brother would be returning soon.

“Sending men and women against them now would mean unnecessarily jeopardizing lives,” Laren pointed out from her seat on a fallen log. “We’re better suited preparing our defenses here within our own walls. Let them come and they’ll see the full force of the Elite nation at its best.”

Orion shook his head, his long black hair falling in his face and across his one good eye. A patch covered the other giving him the appearance of a pirate rather than an Elite human preparing for the Dread invasion.

“They’ll come in full force, by the thousands, maybe more.” Orion opened his arms to the woods around them. “We know these lands better than anyone alive. Let’s meet them on our terms behind cover we have experience with.”

“We’re clearly not getting anywhere here.” Laren turned to Connor. “Thoughts?”

“I was actually wondering what our sorceress had in mind,” Connor deflected with a boyish grin to his mentor. “Morgan, you’ve managed to rebuild and move an entire castle for us. What do you think we should do?”

Morgan rubbed her gnarled hands together. She stared at the map laid out on the table. “In many cases such as this, I feel the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Perhaps we’re looking too hard for a single solution.”

“What do you mean?” Orion asked.

“She means we should do both,” Connor answered, exchanging a smile with Morgan. “We can build our fortifications here while sending out raiding parties to hamper the progress of the main attack force.”

The council grew quiet as each member worked out in their own minds how the purposed scenario would unravel.

“We’ll have to send out a new wave of scouts to assess the enemy’s position,” Connor said.

“Lu will be back any day now,” Laren said just as Connor got the last words out. “He’ll know what’s going on.”

“He will,” Connor stated firmly.
