Chapter Twenty

Kayla

The alarm beeped, drawing a groan from Kayla as she stretched her arm, trying to reach her clock on the far side of the bed. When she couldn’t reach it to stop the annoying beeping, she slid across the empty expanse and smacked it. A light sleeper in her past, she’d opted for a subtle alarm, but with her frequent night wakings to feed Ava, a new alarm clock might be in order.

After almost a month of sleeping by herself, she still woke every morning wishing at least one of the three had shared with her. It had been a fight to keep her bed empty, but she’d persevered. They still worried about her not receiving enough rest, so to appease them, she allowed them to wait on her hand and foot during the daytime hours when they were home.

Tonight, her bed would be full. Both Kris and Ryan had circled the date on the family calendar on the fridge. The date of their first regular season game and, according to Kris’s warning, the first night back in her bed.

Climbing out of bed, Kayla tiptoed to the bathroom as Ava continued to sleep. Ava started each night sleeping in her own crib, but after the first feeding, Kayla put Ava back into the co-sleeper. That way, if Ava woke for a second feeding, Kayla could virtually remain only half awake during the feeding. Starting tonight, either Kris or Ryan would pick up and return Ava to her crib.

At three, almost four months of age, Ava’s development was a mixture of her birth age and her gestational age, but according to her check-up the previous week, most of her development was closer to her birth age, which pleased everyone. As an added bonus, Ava had begun to sleep for six hours a night between feedings.

The bedroom door closed silently behind her. On game days, their home routine was going to change. Instead of Kris and Ryan waking early to start breakfast, she planned on making breakfast for them. After gathering and prepping all the ingredients, she stood in front of the stove sautéing the vegetables for the frittata when Kris’s sandalwood and nutmeg smell surrounded her.

“Morning, KK.” He leaned around her and placed a quick kiss on her lips before backing away. “Mmmm, you’re tasty this morning.” He smacked his lips as his footsteps revealed his movement toward the refrigerator.

“There’s fresh smoothie.”

“Is that the flavour on your lips?” She glanced over at him as she pulled the pan off the heat to catch him winking at her.

“It is.” She wiggled her eyebrows before returning to cooking the frittata. It was nearly three months since she’d first walked through their door and back into their lives. It hadn’t been easy, but they’d made the transition to a family. Their relationships weren’t the same as they’d been six years ago. There was too much time and water under the bridge to go back, but they had forged on. Not having them in her bed at night forced them to develop a greater intimacy.
