Chapter Fourteen

Having a crush was always irrational. Having a crush on her tenant was pure madness. Emily changed lanes to veer around a panel van that was travelling twenty kilometres under the speed limit on the highway out of the city. The only thing that could make her crush more logical would be if there was a plan in place for the future. Which there wasn’t so therefore she was back to pure madness.

“I kissed her, which doesn’t help the logic part at all,” she informed the blue station wagon in front of her. The drive to her mum’s place was the perfect time to analyse last night’s moment of delicious madness. Kissing Skye—sort of—the brush of her skin, sharing breath, feeling the strength of Skye’s body against hers; all of it made her insides tingle. But poor Skye; Emily’s stepping forward then stepping backward business last night must have confused her to no end. She probably had no idea what Emily wanted.

“I sure wish I knew,” she muttered, as she zipped past a delivery truck. She’d stepped forward again that morning, flicking a quick text to Skye that wished her good luck, and that she’d found out what a fixie bike was and it sounded dreadfully difficult to ride and therefore to be safe today in the race and did she mention good luck? The thumbs-up, smiley face, bicycle, sunglasses smiley, party hat with streamers combination that appeared on her screen in reply made her smile. She flicked a glance at the digital clock. Midday. Rush would be starting soon.

Then, her phone, cradled in the holder near the steering wheel, rang, as if it knew it was the item of the moment. The tinny music reverberated through the car’s speakers, so she pressed the answer button on her steering wheel.

“Emily Fitzsimmons speaking.”

“Hello, Emily Fitzsimmons. This is Nic, the Thoroughly Abandoned. Why didn’t I get a goodbye, or a vague wave-like gesture, or even an ‘oi’ across the room last night?” Nic was teasing, but there was a thread of hurt running through his question.

Emily sighed. “I’m sorry, Nic. I was a bit discombobulated and I forgot my manners.”

Nic gave an abrupt laugh. “Discombobulated?”

Another station wagon, the roof racks laden with planks of wood that looked remarkably unstable, cut in front of her. She growled and changed lanes. At this rate, she’d run out of road if any more Sunday drivers accessed the highway.

“I’m going to assume that animalistic noise is not for me,” Nic said, his voice infused with laughter.

“No. Drivers. Anyway, discombobulated. I kissed Skye,” Emily stated matter-of-factly, and gripped the steering wheel in preparation for Nic’s response.

“Really?” He stretched the word. She could feel the waves of glee pouring from the phone.

"Well, yes. Sort of.” Emily glared at the dashboard, noticing her speed was increasing in direct correlation to her anxiety. She softened her foot on the accelerator. “It was more a touching of a lip.”

Nic snorted. “One?"

“Yes. Like my mouth had heart failure right at the critical moment…” she faded away as Nic’s deep laugh rolled through the car’s interior.
