We ate some noodles and opened our fortune cookies.

Mine said “Customer service is like breathing, you just have to do it.” His said “May the weather be good to you.”

Not exactly the big, guiding messages I’d been hoping for, but oh well.

“I thought you’d forgotten about me,” he said soon, sounding almost…ashamed.

“Um. The idea of ever forgetting about you is terrifying to me.”

“Then where were you?”

“I was…thinking.”

We listened to the rain.

“Be honest,” I asked soon. “What’s the first thing you thought when you saw me? Like, the very first thing?”

“I didn’t ‘think’ anything at all, because I was too busy staring at your ass. It’s genuinely, truly, a wonder of this world.”

I laughed. “Don’t thank me. Thank the jogging hobby I took up to get over my depression.”

“Ha!” he cackled. “Seriously, though, the first thing I noticed was that you seemed, well…like me. You were a little…haunted, in a way that instantly kind of struck me.”

“So…a hot ass, and a pair of haunted-house eyes. Am I getting close?”

“Just about, yeah.”

He swiveled over and looked at me in my eyes. “Coley. Are you okay? Do you want to do this?”

I played with my fingernail. “I…I have never wanted anything more. I swear to fucking God, you were like a blessing that fell into an atheist’s lap. But you…”

“Yes?”

“I want to make sure you understand something. Like, fully, once and for all.”

“Okay?”

“You are…you are moving into a home that had a previous occupant. A renter that did some damage. I hope you understand that. Do you? Like, for real?”

He smirked that patented George smirk. “I’m good at renovating. You don’t scare me, boy.”

“We’ll see, girlfriend.”

He fluffed my hair. “God, I love that you’re comfortable enough with the whole gay thing now to call me a girl. I’ve watched you change so much already.”

“All because of you.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“You know it’s true. And same for me,” he said.

“In what way?”

“You…you opened my world, Coley. In a way you don’t even see. I didn’t even see you coming until you were already here and had changed everything. So…so what if this Nicky guy is in there, in your heart. I’m not daunted. I would be honored to be there, too. I mean, haven’t you ever heard of people getting pregnant with twins? Two bodies can live inside one human. Totally. So I can be his twin. Hey, tell me about him.”

“For real?”

“For real! And not the novelized version. The real version.”

So I did.

I started with the beginning, when a beautiful hazel-green eyed boy started giving me looks from across the gym. Then I went into the messier parts, when we’d spend a few beautiful days together before he’d pull away in horror, since he was more closeted than I was. I ended with the ending: his death, and how I was so closed out of his life by then, I never even knew it happened until I stalked his social media profiles weeks later, and stumbled upon the shock of a lifetime when I saw “RIP” comments from his friends.
