* * * *

Late afternoon came without a word from Luke. Marshall had spent the time

lounging, cleaning, and poking into medicine cabinets and closets to find that Luke was

damn close to a Boy Scout. It made the knowledge of where Luke was now and what he

was likely doing that much harder to take. Marshall couldn’t help wishing he could

have gone for support, but he respected Luke’s need to take care of things himself.

When the phone rang, Marshall jumped to grab it, only to find it was C.J. calling.

Trying not to sound disappointed, Marshall sighed. “Hey, Ceej.”

“Marsh, your mama says hi. She wants to know why you don’t come for Sunday

dinner.”

Marshall laughed and rubbed the back of his neck. “That where you been?”

“Nobody makes pot roast like your mama. So how’d your date go?” Anyone

would have heard C.J.’s teasing tone, but Marshall picked up the undercurrent of worry

too. After so many years, she couldn’t hide anything from him.

“It was good, baby girl.” Marshall smiled at the handset, feeling light-headed. He

settled onto Luke’s couch and laid his head on the headrest. “He’s havin’ a rough time

with his soon-to-be ex, but I think he’s gonna step to me, y’know? Imma make him

dinner in a minute so he can come home to the sweet smell of home cookin’.”

“Oh, Marsh, you got it bad.” C.J. huffed, sounding nervous and tickled at the same

time. “It’s been a long time since you seemed so hopeful, and I don’t wanna wreck it,

but—”

“No.” Marshall cut her off, gentle but firm. “C.J., I think I might be fallin’.”

C.J.’s silence stretched until it grew uncomfortable.

“Ceej?” Marshall’s stomach twisted. “I didn’t tell him. I’m not rushin’ it. Just…he’s

a good man. He even offered to find us a church! He says there’s places that’d welcome

us, and he’d sit by me and hold my hand. Do you know how long it’s been since I even

felt like that was possible for me?”

“Marsh…” C.J. exhaled heavily, her breath fuzzy in his handset, so loud but so far

away. “Don’t expect too much. Promise me.”

“Love you, baby girl. I’ll talk to you later.” Marshall hung up before she could say

more. He didn’t know yet exactly how he felt, what he wanted, but he knew it was too

fragile to hold up to her questions and warnings.

In the kitchen, Marshall found an apron, some beer, and enough ingredients to

whip up a vegetable casserole his mama had always made when he was growing up. It

was halfway to a quiche, rich and buttery, with a potato crust. The scent of caramelized

veggies and reducing wine filled the air. It was more sophisticated than last night’s fare

and should keep in the oven until Luke got home.

By the time he’d set the oven timer, Marshall’s apron was dirty, his beer was gone,

and his anxiety about when Luke would finally return was reaching a peak.

He was just about to reach for his phone to break the silence when he heard keys

in the door. Marshall washed his hands and braced himself, anxious for Luke’s state of

mind.
