Late afternoon came without a word from Luke. Marshall had spent the time
lounging, cleaning, and poking into medicine cabinets and closets to find that Luke was
damn close to a Boy Scout. It made the knowledge of where Luke was now and what he
was likely doing that much harder to take. Marshall couldnât help wishing he could
have gone for support, but he respected Lukeâs need to take care of things himself.
When the phone rang, Marshall jumped to grab it, only to find it was C.J. calling.
Trying not to sound disappointed, Marshall sighed. âHey, Ceej.â
âMarsh, your mama says hi. She wants to know why you donât come for Sunday
dinner.â
Marshall laughed and rubbed the back of his neck. âThat where you been?â
âNobody makes pot roast like your mama. So howâd your date go?â Anyone
would have heard C.J.âs teasing tone, but Marshall picked up the undercurrent of worry
too. After so many years, she couldnât hide anything from him.
âIt was good, baby girl.â Marshall smiled at the handset, feeling light-headed. He
settled onto Lukeâs couch and laid his head on the headrest. âHeâs havinâ a rough time
with his soon-to-be ex, but I think heâs gonna step to me, yâknow? Imma make him
dinner in a minute so he can come home to the sweet smell of home cookinâ.â
âOh, Marsh, you got it bad.â C.J. huffed, sounding nervous and tickled at the same
time. âItâs been a long time since you seemed so hopeful, and I donât wanna wreck it,
butââ
âNo.â Marshall cut her off, gentle but firm. âC.J., I think I might be fallinâ.â
C.J.âs silence stretched until it grew uncomfortable.
âCeej?â Marshallâs stomach twisted. âI didnât tell him. Iâm not rushinâ it. Justâ¦heâs
a good man. He even offered to find us a church! He says thereâs places thatâd welcome
us, and heâd sit by me and hold my hand. Do you know how long itâs been since I even
felt like that was possible for me?â

âMarshâ¦â C.J. exhaled heavily, her breath fuzzy in his handset, so loud but so far
away. âDonât expect too much. Promise me.â
âLove you, baby girl. Iâll talk to you later.â Marshall hung up before she could say
more. He didnât know yet exactly how he felt, what he wanted, but he knew it was too
fragile to hold up to her questions and warnings.
In the kitchen, Marshall found an apron, some beer, and enough ingredients to
whip up a vegetable casserole his mama had always made when he was growing up. It
was halfway to a quiche, rich and buttery, with a potato crust. The scent of caramelized
veggies and reducing wine filled the air. It was more sophisticated than last nightâs fare
and should keep in the oven until Luke got home.
By the time heâd set the oven timer, Marshallâs apron was dirty, his beer was gone,
and his anxiety about when Luke would finally return was reaching a peak.
He was just about to reach for his phone to break the silence when he heard keys
in the door. Marshall washed his hands and braced himself, anxious for Lukeâs state of
mind.
