Fae Powers

Billie

Hope fluttered feathery wings against my heart as I clutched onto the memory of River’s voice. I heard him; I knew I did. Not understanding how it happened or what the black lines that appeared on my chest meant was driving me crazy, and I replayed the event over and over until it blended into a slick mess of thoughts. The closest thing I could think of was Mel and Raiden’s mate bond, but this couldn’t be it. River and I could not be mated; I wasn’t a shifter, and Mel said the bond must occur between two identical bloodlines. Still, it was much too coincidental for me to discard the theory, especially when I wanted it to be true so badly.

That’s not it, I tried to convince myself. But could it be?

“Ugh,” I groaned and faced the emptiness before me. “If this is some trick you’re playing, it won’t work!”

The cavern answered in its usual manner—with melodic drips and a reminder I was still nowhere close to escaping. “Thanks for nothing!”

Looking down to my chest, it disappointed me to see it clear of markings and my heart grew heavy in my chest. Hearing River’s voice offered a burst of energy I hadn’t expected, yet now that it was gone, I was back to feeling sorry for myself like a complete loser. When did I become this pathetic? It was infuriating and I shook the weakness off, concentrating on the rock wall in front of me.

My head pounded as I attempted to reach for the stone with my mind, imagining it bursting outward like it did before. When nothing happened, again, I slumped my shoulders and let out an annoyed huff.

“What a waste of time.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure,” a euphonic voice said from the gloomy tunnel.

I strained to see through the dark, my eyes focusing on the outline of a man in the distance. “Oh, look who’s back! Dear old dad,” I hissed, sarcasm dripping off my lips like molasses. “Came to give me some more bum advice?”

Shadow man chuckled and the surrounding night dispersed for a brief moment. I had given up on trying to make out his face. Whoever this man was, he didn’t want me knowing his true identity. Which was fine by me; I had no intention of making friends with the dad imposter.

“You’re very close, daughter,” he said, taking a few steps inward. “Yet you’re still fighting it.”

“Fighting what?” I bit out. “I found my power like you said and nothing happened. I moved a freaking rock, big deal.”

“A very big deal indeed…”

Grinding my teeth, I let out a low growl. “You’re honestly insufferable. Anyone ever tell you that?”

“Some,” he mused. “I have my moments.”

“Look, not that I don’t appreciate the company, but unless you have something to help get me out of here, I’m kind of busy.”

His head whipped around the cavern. “Yes, clearly.”

What an actual ass.

Fighting the scowl that refused to leave me, I trained narrowed eyes his way. “Seriously, what do you want?”

He was silent, taking the chance to try and scare me, no doubt.
