CHAPTER 23
The combination of metal doors, electronic terminals, and rock walls gave the place a Next Gen âPlanet of the Apesâ feel, along with many doctors and technicians in silvery space suits adding a Bond villain flare. However you sliced it, it was interesting. Merrick wouldâve loved to have explored the lab, but he was also an enemy interloper on a mission to find Sydney before they could turn her into a âhost.â No time to admire the cool underground lair.
He had donned Rashelâs suit and luckily didnât see her anywhere yet. Neither did he see the little doctor who had been with her. He found one of the stray computer tablets which were plentifully supplied all over the lab, then swiped it open and pretended to be studying its screen. Keeping his face down would hopefully make it harder to identify him through the clear face shield while he casually mosied around. Although he had no idea where Sydney might be, he figured if he circumnavigated the lab, he may hear or see something that led him to her. So far, no one questioned him or disputed his presence. Everyone looked very busy.
Merrickâs nerves were shredded, his vision was still swimming like he was switching between two sets of eyes, and anger was radiating from his pores like mini volcanoes. The essence of The Other One still lingered from the Spirit Cave. His fingernails were also stubby gray claws. Fortunately, they were covered by the rubber-tipped gloves that accompanied the suit.
Merrick kept his head bent to the tablet screen while his eyes searched the lab. As a group of technicians passed by, Merrick kept his body pressed to the wall, head down. His eyes noticed the tabletâs menu screen for the first time.
The top was a menu of options. âHome, Projects, Assignments, Staff.â Below was the lab layout. One of the first things he saw on the layout was a box in the top middle labeled âElevator.â Plain enough. He wondered what part of the upper story ruins the elevator went to, but he didnât have time to investigate. No stairs were depicted anywhere, just the one elevator.
Rooms were numbered, not named. Searching for Sydney wouldnât be as easy as seeing âRoom 101: Freaky Creature Making Room,â or âRoom 311: Innocent Hostage Room.â He tapped the âProjectsâ tab and the lab layout wiped away replaced by a simple list.
â1356
1762
1207
XH103.â
Merrick had no idea where to start so he began at the top and tapped âProject 1356.â
That window whisked away and a new window slid in that had a smaller depiction of the lab layout. One of the rooms, branded â2,â was highlighted. Merrick did some mental calculations and discovered the room in question was only a few steps ahead of him. Those few casual steps brought him to Room 2âs open door, and he had yet to be noticed.
Inside was devoid of workers so Merrick dared to shuffle in and close the door behind him. He kept low because three large windows opened to the corridor.
