I’m sitting in Dale’s home office bright and early the next morning. Mary, being the amazing hostess she is, left a pot of freshly brewed coffee and blueberry muffins she baked yesterday before leaving us to our task.

I’m on my second muffin and third cup of coffee as Dale reads over the statement again, making sure it’s clear and to the point. He sits back in his chair and takes off his glasses, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I think that’ll do it. I’ll send this off to the team and let them take care of the rest.”

I crumble up my muffin wrapper and toss it in the trash. “Thanks Dale.” I check my phone and stand. “I should head to the field.”

Dale stands and comes around his desk and claps me on the back. “I’ll walk you out.” He walks me to the front door and opens it.

“Tell Mary thanks again for the muffins and coffee.” I shake his hand and turn to leave.

“Kessler,” he calls when I’m halfway down his steps.

I turn back and look at him. “Yeah?”

“If Lucy is as important to you as you say she is. Don’t let this stuff come between you and your relationship with her. At the end of the day, what’s most important is your family. Not the opinions of strangers.”

I nod and give him a wave then head to my truck. I’m not the one we have to worry about letting it come between us. I climb into my truck and pull up my call log and dial Lucy’s number. It rings twice before she picks up.

“Hello?” she puffs out.

“Good morning, beautiful. How did you sleep last night? Dream of me?” I tease and wiggle my eyebrows even though she can’t see me.

She huffs out a laugh. “Hi, handsome. I slept like shit.” She pauses, panting then continues, “Sorry to report no good dreams.” Then more panting.

“Lucy, what are you doing? You sound out of breath.” My cock stirs.

Jesus.

Why does my mind always go there?

Because she’s hot as fuck.

I adjust myself and merge onto the freeway.

“I needed to clear my head so I got up early and went for a run,” she pants out.

“What’s going on?” I ask. “I know the paparazzi thing freaked you out last night, but I told you I’d take care of it and I did. I just left my agent, Dale’s house, and we drafted a press release about what really happened. And the boys are minors so legally they can’t release their photos without consent, which they don’t have.

More panting.

“Ok. Yeah, that–that makes me feel better. Thank you Kessler.”

I debate mentioning what Dale suggested about us going public, and decide it’d probably be better if I talk to her about that in person. I turn off onto my exit, but take a right instead of a left towards the field. “Where are you right now?”

“About three blocks from my house. I’m cooling out now,” she says, her breaths not sounding as labored. “Why?”

I turn into her neighborhood and drive in the direction of her house.
