Cat ducked further behind the bush as a car carrying two men drove past in a pickup. They hadn’t seen her and didn’t stop. She breathed a sigh of relief and checked her watch. Rick had been gone twenty minutes, yet it seemed an age. Still carrying the rubber mats, she paced amidst the bracken. She felt so helpless and realized she wasn’t used to this role. Working with a partner might have its compensations, such as bouncing ideas off each other and sharing concerns and danger but it threw her because she felt she wasn’t quite thinking through all the angles. When she worked alone, she was thorough and planned ahead. and believed she left nothing to chance. The operation in Anger had worked perfectly. The Ananke plant had suffered a serious delay in production, costing it thousands if not millions of Euros, and no lives were put at risk—because she’d prepared the sabotage properly. The same applied to her break-in at Rick’s office; she’d planned that over a number of days.

Voices scattered her thoughts.

Abruptly, she stopped walking and hunkered down behind a bush as two more men left the shed and climbed into a parked car. How many were left inside? Apart from Rick and Zabala. There was one more car and Zabala’s Renault still parked.

She scanned the area, her mouth dry.

Nobody else about.

She wouldn’t wait. It was too exasperating. Using the rubber mats for protection against the barbs, she scaled the fence, finding it awkward in her court shoes. All I need now is to catch a heel in mesh! Her forearms shuddered as took her weight and balanced at the top; then she swung her legs over and dropped through the air. She landed lightly on the other side and freed the rubber mats and left them on the ground this side for later.

Again, she checked the entire area.

Still nobody about.

In a crouching run, she crossed the open space, feeling conspicuous.

As she reached the boardwalk and paused to catch her breath, the lights inside the shed went out. Then she heard men’s voices. She hurried and hid behind the stack of planks. Through a gap in the pile, she had a view of the boardwalk, the shed door, and the car parking area.

Her heart skittered as she recognized Zabala. He was with another man who fiddled with keys and secured a padlock on the door.

Zabala fished out a bunch of keys from his jacket pocket. “I’m going to pay a visit on a model in Gosport…”

Cat felt the blood drain from her face, and she involuntarily shivered.

“Lucky you, sir.”

Cat gritted her teeth. You’ll be out of luck, Zabala!

Zabala grinned. “Quite so. She’s going to get quite a surprise!”

“Your Barcelona flight is still tomorrow evening?”

“Oh, yes, it’s scheduled for six forty-five. I can deal with the model and make it in plenty of time.”

That’s what you think, Zabala!

Zabala’s next words slammed into her like a truck, knocking the wind from her: “You’re sure you can handle the body first thing in the morning?”

Body? Oh, my God.
