Surveying the Offing

On this beach here not even grasses grow

what a lonely beach

as I quietly watch the waves like this

upon waves waves pile

and a white evening moon seems to float up above them

out alone I view shore-tamed pines

I view the islands and ships afloat in the sky

and am lying, arms and legs stretched out

for a hint of happiness I’ve called to for long but had no response from

I turn to the offing and survey.

To Be Held in Strong Arms

Like a reed blown in the wind

my heart is feeble always trembling with fear

woman

hold my body stoutly

with your beautiful dauntless right arm

soothe this trembling sick heart quietly quietly

just hold it tight my body

come near my shoulder closely

and put your lovely warm hand

on my feeble heart

ah place your hand here on this spot of the heart

woman

and you, talk to me

in gentle words wet with tears,

“Good child

don’t fear do not fear anything

you are healthy and happy

whatever may frighten your heart you should not be frightened

just gaze into the distance

do not bat your eyes

if you bat your eyes, your feeble heart will fly away like a bird

stay always firmly close by me

firmly on this heart of mine

these beautiful hands

this chest this arm

and these fearless breasts.”
