Jake

I woke with the sun the following morning as it slanted straight through the windows of the yacht and onto my eyes. I sat up slowly, feeling my body creak and ache, and then I went into the kitchen to start the coffee brewing. I leaned against the counter as I waited for the pot to finish, scratching at the top of the bandage over the graze down my arm. Once the coffee was made, I poured myself a cup and went out onto the back deck to find Doc already out there with the same book from the night before. He closed it as he heard the sliding glass door open, and I raised my cup in greeting.

“There’s coffee inside, if you want it,” I said.

“That sounds like just the ticket,” he said and put his book to the side to get up and head inside.

I settled down on one of the other cushions and watched the water as I sipped my coffee. The sunrise stained the waves yellow and orange, and they glimmered as they skimmed over the surface of the ocean, occasionally breaking into little, white swells.

Doc returned a minute later with a steaming cup of his own, and he sat down in his original spot, picking his book back up. We sat that way until the others began to wake one by one, shuffling out onto the deck in varying states of dress and wakefulness. Xavier was the perkiest of the group, though he was far more used to multiple sleepless nights in a row since he frequently did it to himself while on a research bender.

“I’ve got something on Kiki,” he said the moment he sat down and drew his computer onto his lap.

That woke the rest of us right up. I leaned forward to put my mug on top of the cooler we’d left outside last night, and Doc abandoned his book for good as he shifted so he could see better. Rosa compulsively scratched under her cast with a pen, though Doc eventually reached over and took it from her with a judgmental look. Julia sat wrapped in a bathrobe beside Xavier, a cup of coffee in her hands.

“Her real name is Kikuko Sato,” Xavier began. “She’s originally from Japan, and she uses Kiki as a moniker for her work overseas. She honestly might be scarier than Brandon. She’s an expert marksman, especially with a sniper rifle, but her main skill lies in demolition, and she’s got an engineering degree she uses to create crazy traps and toys to use against her marks.”

“So, she’s a bomb maker,” I said. “She must have made the stuff they used to blow out the back of the safe house.”

“It’s more than just bombs,” Xavier continued. “I’m talking acid traps, chemical weapons, spring traps, little homing drones that explode on impact… There’s some real science fiction level stuff in here. We’re lucky we haven’t encountered any of them yet.”

Rosa held up her notebook. It read, Brandon’s no doubt saving them for last.
