Chapter Twelve
âAre you sure Dr. Drake didnât have any enemies?â I ask Amber, knowing full well sheâs just lied to me.
She stiffens. âDr. Drake was a kind, lovely man, completely dedicated to his work. There might have been some professional jealousy among the other academics, but no one ever threatened him that Iâm aware of.â
âHow long did you work for him?â Will asks her.
âSix months.â
âHow did you get the job?â I ask.
âI had just finished my masterâs degree in anthropology and was looking for something before applying for PhD programs. Iâve always admired Dr. Drake so I took a research position with him.â She starts sniffling again. âHe was nothing but kind to me. As a matter of fact, he was going to write me a letter of recommendation.â
Huh. So Amber had more to gain by Dr. Drake being alive than dead, but she still lied to me about him not having any enemies. I wish I could call her out on it, but I donât know how to do that without exposing my gift.
Will looks around the circle. âWhoâs next?â
âIâll go,â Wayne says. He hands his camera off to Bonnie so she can film while heâs speaking.
Wayne pulls his shoulders back and clears his throat. âIâm Wayne Hopkins, professional documentary filmmaker. I came on the island to film Dr. Drakeâs expedition, but now, like the rest of my fellow castaways, Iâm stranded here with a ruthless killer until help arrives. Maybe I was the intended victim. Who knows?â He gingerly rubs his head. âThe killer came after me first. He or she,â he says, pausing to gaze at our little group with accusation in his eyes, âhit me over the head and left me for dead.â
âIf Amber didnât see you get hit on the head,â Will says, âhow do we know it even happened?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Wayne says.
âWe only have your word that you got hit on the head. Right?â
We all look to Amber for verification. âIâve already told you a thousand times, I didnât see anyone hit Wayne.â
Will nods. âSo Wayne could have easily used his camera to kill Dr. Drake, then faked that someone had attacked him to give him an alibi.â
Wayne lets out a howl of anger. âI ought to deck you for that!â He lunges at Will. The two men tussle for a few seconds before Victor manages to insert himself between them, barely dodging Wayneâs fist in the process.
âSee here!â Victor puffs, holding Wayne by the collar. âYouâre acting like ruffians!â
âWhat possible motive could I have for killing Dr. Drake?â Wayne chokes out.
âI have no idea,â Victor says, âbut Iâm not the only one who must have noticed youâre not slurring your words like before. I have to agree with Will. This supposed attack of yours isnât adding up.â He gives the younger men a stern look. âDo I have your word the two of you can conduct yourselves in a gentlemanly fashion?â
Will nods, clearly embarrassed.
Wayne shakes loose from Victorâs grasp. âYou people are insane.
