Chapter Twelve

“Are you sure Dr. Drake didn’t have any enemies?” I ask Amber, knowing full well she’s just lied to me.

She stiffens. “Dr. Drake was a kind, lovely man, completely dedicated to his work. There might have been some professional jealousy among the other academics, but no one ever threatened him that I’m aware of.”

“How long did you work for him?” Will asks her.

“Six months.”

“How did you get the job?” I ask.

“I had just finished my master’s degree in anthropology and was looking for something before applying for PhD programs. I’ve always admired Dr. Drake so I took a research position with him.” She starts sniffling again. “He was nothing but kind to me. As a matter of fact, he was going to write me a letter of recommendation.”

Huh. So Amber had more to gain by Dr. Drake being alive than dead, but she still lied to me about him not having any enemies. I wish I could call her out on it, but I don’t know how to do that without exposing my gift.

Will looks around the circle. “Who’s next?”

“I’ll go,” Wayne says. He hands his camera off to Bonnie so she can film while he’s speaking.

Wayne pulls his shoulders back and clears his throat. “I’m Wayne Hopkins, professional documentary filmmaker. I came on the island to film Dr. Drake’s expedition, but now, like the rest of my fellow castaways, I’m stranded here with a ruthless killer until help arrives. Maybe I was the intended victim. Who knows?” He gingerly rubs his head. “The killer came after me first. He or she,” he says, pausing to gaze at our little group with accusation in his eyes, “hit me over the head and left me for dead.”

“If Amber didn’t see you get hit on the head,” Will says, “how do we know it even happened?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Wayne says.

“We only have your word that you got hit on the head. Right?”

We all look to Amber for verification. “I’ve already told you a thousand times, I didn’t see anyone hit Wayne.”

Will nods. “So Wayne could have easily used his camera to kill Dr. Drake, then faked that someone had attacked him to give him an alibi.”

Wayne lets out a howl of anger. “I ought to deck you for that!” He lunges at Will. The two men tussle for a few seconds before Victor manages to insert himself between them, barely dodging Wayne’s fist in the process.

“See here!” Victor puffs, holding Wayne by the collar. “You’re acting like ruffians!”

“What possible motive could I have for killing Dr. Drake?” Wayne chokes out.

“I have no idea,” Victor says, “but I’m not the only one who must have noticed you’re not slurring your words like before. I have to agree with Will. This supposed attack of yours isn’t adding up.” He gives the younger men a stern look. “Do I have your word the two of you can conduct yourselves in a gentlemanly fashion?”

Will nods, clearly embarrassed.

Wayne shakes loose from Victor’s grasp. “You people are insane.
