║ 21. REVENGE IS SWEET║

EROS

The strong energy in the vicinity was painfully obvious. The sizzling static, the heavy, charged atmosphere—all signified a powerful presence.

Eros loomed in the shadows near the morgue, observing the dark doors, awaiting their opening. His heart throbbed with trepidation, nervousness, fear, happiness—all ranges of emotions entangled in him.

I'm so glad I stayed.

As he prepared to depart for a new town—he thought somewhere in Texas—he sensed a conflict raging in New Orleans. A familiar sensation he had encountered before; an energy that flitted under his skin and made his muscles twitch. It didn't take him long to identify it as an argument between a human... and a god.

A rare occurrence, yes; but Eros had no trouble recognizing such godly anger, as he’d come across it in his youth—with all the horrible things his mother made him do for the Olympians—and would never forget the way it scarred him.

The feeling grew in intensity the closer he got to the spot where he tracked it—the coroner's office.

Only one god lingered in the city, he knew.

Mother.

So, it was her and the human FBI agent, it had to be. His mother's rage trickled under his skin as he sniffed the atmosphere, stationed near the morgue, silently waiting for the results.

The strength of the argument permeated the air—whatever their disagreement, it was unsolvable, and he wished he could hear the details. Pleasure ran down his spine, tingling his limbs.

Mommy's got a lot of emotions!

Her soul was confused, crying, screaming. Never had Eros pictured the mighty Aphrodite as one to break down so easily.

As he chuckled, he grunted, reverting to a frown almost at once.

Why hadn't she killed the human yet? She didn't need him. She was more powerful than him. More powerful than anyone. Yes, Lukus was handsome—but useless.

Eros breathed in the light ambrosia scent still weaving in and out of his aura, tasted its sweetness on his tongue, its delicate nectar coursing through his veins.

"Thank you, Anteros." His brother had risked his immortality to revive him, and Eros planned to reward him when the time came.

Now, his power levels exploded, amplified, engorged. His fingers prickled with delight, his heart beating fast at the idea of shooting more deadly arrows and destroying more humans.

More chaos to provoke, more cannibalism to enforce, more carnivorous murders to come.

He envisioned the gruesome crime scenes he left behind. The decaying corpses, the thick puddles of blood, the pieces of eaten flesh. The overwhelming stench of death, the horrified witnesses, the chunks of hearts surrounding the dead bodies.

He smiled, reveling in his brutal methods. Pleased with his torture, his manner of pushing humans to absolute disgust and despair.

But he still had to deal with Aphrodite. Make her admit her crime, confess the truth. She started it all though Eros didn't plan on torturing only her. But with his renewed strength, he no longer feared confronting her.

Gaping at the doors, unsure who he hoped to see escape, he crossed his arms. Someone would storm out at any moment.
