Trucks, big trucks, buffeting, anti-sway

Trucks

Unless an overtaking truck driver comes up on your UHF radio listening channel and advises you differently, don’t make the mistake of slowing down as the truck approaches the rear of your van. The truckie normally bases his overtaking speed on his appraisal of your constant speed. A truckie will rarely overtake you unless he believes he can do it safely, and he’s simply not allowing for you to slow. If you do slow down as he runs up to you, you may even balk him, and then you could find yourself in an uncomfortable situation.

The best option is to do nothing different. Braking can drop you back far too close to him, much too quickly, and make his steering out to overtake you much more difficult. Acceleration can throw the truckie’s distance, speed and time estimate out. As a general rule, once the last trailer has reached your driver’s position it is safe to decelerate and let the truck move clear easily, because then when he moves left across into the lane in front of you there will be a bigger gap between the two vehicles.
