Walker had suddenly gotten quiet.

Zara was worried. So worried, her stomach started a slow roil. What had happened to his smiles and his quips, his heated sidelong looks? As they finished up their lunch, he seemed to withdraw, once again becoming the impassive doctor who had first greeted her in her hospital room.

She wanted her friend back.

“Is something wrong?” she finally asked as he opened the door for her after picking up the oil painting of Danehus from the antique dealer down the block. He’d insisted on paying for the painting, but hadn’t met her gaze during the transaction.

In answer, a smile appeared on his lips, but the crinkles around his eyes didn’t shift. “Nothing’s wrong. Shall we take a cab back to the palace?”

He was keeping something from her. But what?

A pain shot from her stomach to her chest thinking about what it might be. She grasped his arm to steady herself. “I am feeling a bit knackered,” she admitted.

His brow creased. “You look a little pinched. Didn’t the pasta agree with you?”

“No, I—” A wave of nausea hit her square in the gut. Okay, she was concerned about his sudden chilliness, but this was ridiculous. She rubbed her chest, which burned like the devil. “I’m not sure. I—”

“Come on, let’s find somewhere to sit down. You’re really not looking so good.”

“No, I’m fine, really. I just—” Suddenly, her whole body clenched so violently she cried out. “Oh, God! Walker, my stomach! I think I’m—”

And for the second time in a week, the blackness reached out to grab her with sharp, ugly talons, dragging her down into the spinning depths of nothingness.
