- CHAPTER FIFTEEN -
The Body in the Woods
THEA WAS IN the Howling Woods all along. They found her body buried in a shallow grave next to a stream. Whoever hid her there had done a good enough job at making sure any search party would struggle to find her, but they had not foreseen the cadaver dog that alerted its owner during an impromptu walk through the haunted woodland. Every dog has its day.
The Metropolitan Police posted a statement on their social media feed that day: This morning, Thursday, 11 January, you may have been aware of police activity around the Howling Woods. We want to provide you with an update on that activity. We were called at noon to reports of a body in the woodland close to Wisteria Way. Specialist officers subsequently attended the scene and sadly recovered a body. We are currently treating the death as unexplained. Theaâs family have been informed of developments, and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times. We ask that their privacy is respected.
They confirmed the body was Thea Williams the following day. The local and national media went into a frenzy over the breaking news that the body discovered in the search for the missing woman in Cricklewood did, in fact, turn out to be Thea Williams, launching the case into a murder investigation. An avalanche wouldnât have stopped journalists from all over the country descending on the town to get their report of the disturbing story.
The Town of Darkness, as expected, was alight with superstitious rumours. Theories about what could have led to the murder grew apace, becoming more fantastical by the second. Some people believed the discovery confirmed that Thea had been the victim of a satanic ritual. One rumour spoke of a black magic curse centuries old that had reawakened to claim another victim. There was even talk that Thea might have wandered off and become a victim of the Deadly River Hags of England since her body was discovered near a stream. It was the usual folklore. And much of it nonsense. Whatever had happened, the town was living up to its name.
Kat showed genuine sadness when she heard the news. Surprisingly, since sheâd had Cullen hanged, drawn and quartered since day one, even she conceded that the murderer could be anyone. The sadness didnât last long, however, because she was invited to appear on television as Cricklewoodâs resident reporter. An entire afternoon was spent preparing for her TV debut, much to my annoyance since I was asked to act the role of presenter.
Adjusting her new hairstyle, which she had been fussing over because she had to have it done at the last minute, she suddenly looked aghast when she felt something on the side of her head.
âOh my god, have I had a track showing all this time!? That is so ghetto! That makes me feel â¦.â She took a deep breath and closed her eyes before opening them again, âa lot of things.
