AS I’M SURE YOU can imagine, I was always hoping this section of the book—dealing with the ICC World Twenty20—would be longer than it’s turned out to be. I’m a bit stunned at the moment, though the nature of the draw and Twenty20 cricket itself always meant that we were no certainties to make the second stage of the tournament. We were pitted in the same group as Sri Lanka and the West Indies, with only two to go through, and they are two dangerous teams featuring great attacking cricketers such as Chris Gayle, Ajantha Mendis and Kumar Sangakkara. I was confident we’d beat at least one of them, but it wasn’t to be. Now, I reckon either team could go on and win the entire tournament—especially the Windies, because if Gayle gets going he’s just about unstoppable. Meanwhile, we’re heading to Leicester, to lick our proverbial wounds and get ready for the Ashes.
