* * * *

Callie couldn’t believe how easy it was to talk to Wayne – once she got started, anyway. The scare of seeing Theo left her mind foggy and her tongue swollen. She’d seen her life pass before her eyes, knowing that the police would come arrest her and hang her for Bill’s death. She thought for sure that she’d never get to explain her side of what happened that fateful day. Thankfully, Wayne forced her to talk… and she was very relieved that he did it so nicely.

She didn’t have a lot to tell Wayne about Mr. Lindon. After all, she’d only really communicated with Milly Crenshaw at the Westward Home and Hearts Matrimonial Agency. Mrs. Crenshaw told her what train to take, on what day, and what time. Callie knew the man’s name was Everett Lindon and had a five-year-old daughter, Daisy. Callie didn’t even know what they looked like, except for that they’d be waiting for her when she arrived at the station.

Wayne smiled as he listened to her, and she couldn’t believe how comforting it was to have a man understand. He should be judging her, but he wasn’t. After all, she just confessed to murdering her husband. So, why was he acting like she was the victim?

There was silence between them for the longest time as he held her hand and caressed her fingers. She watched the land move by, and gradually, the train started slowing. They were nearly there.

Her heart hammered wildly. She’d have to say goodbye to Wayne. Unless, he kept his word and stayed as her friend.

She swung her focus to him. He’d been looking at her hand but raised his gaze to her.

“Wayne, will I ever see you again?”

He smiled. “I think so. After all, we’ll both be living in Fort Collins.”

Her thoughts screeched to a halt. “Pardon me? You live there, too?”

Wayne chuckled. “I thought I told you that.”

“No. I assumed you were just going there on business.”

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I do live there.”

Her heart dropped. This was worse than she thought. They would see each other every time she left Mr. Lindon’s cattle ranch to ride into town for shopping purposes. And, seeing Wayne would make her wish that she’d married him and not Mr. Lindon.

The twisting of her stomach increased as the train rolled to a stop. She pulled her hands away from his because they were starting to get moist from her nerves. Although she wanted to give Wayne a proper goodbye kiss, she couldn’t now. Kissing him would only make her want more. That could never happen again.

“Well,” she said, turning to Wayne. “I suppose this is it.”

He caressed her cheek. “Until we see each other in town.”

“Yes, but… it won’t be the same.”

“We’ll still be friends.”

“Yes, but that’s all we can be.”

He moved closer, circling his arms around her. “If your rancher husband doesn’t make you happy, please find me.”

She shook her head. “I told you, I will be happy because I’ll be starting a new life.
