The drive back to the station took forever. Traffic clogged the freeway, which normally would have annoyed me. It was part of the reason I preferred my bike—a suped up Indian—to a car. This time, however, my mind was so preoccupied that I barely noticed it.

Something was really wrong here. The pieces didn’t add up, and as someone who was used to having a good deal of the information, or at least being able to discover it on my own, I was frustrated and confused.

My gut told me that the pack’s issues were linked. I wasn’t sure how, but I’d figure it out. Even if Ren was a spy against the Walker pack, he deserved justice. Marcus deserved to know the truth about his friend.

The case regarding his father was a bigger source of conflict for me. Logan Walker must be embroiled in something horrible to have a case open against him. But what?

I turned into the station parking lot, shaking my head. I hadn’t come to a single solid conclusion. In fact, I probably had more questions than when I left Clover Pines.

Hopefully reading Ren’s file will shed some light on this situation.

I unfolded out of his car and waved to Seth, who was leaving for lunch. The donuts that I’d bought had halfway melted in the passenger seat, but I lifted the box all the same. The guys I worked with weren’t picky when it came to pastries.

“Hey! Want one?”

His eyes widened, and he dashed over. “Oh, hell yes! You’re a lifesaver, Crawford. I had the worst sweet tooth earlier and these are my favorite.”

“We’ll take what you want, because you know they won’t be here when you get back.” I wasn’t much one for stereotypes, but the one about the law enforcement officers and the donuts was pretty spot on. A dozen baked goods didn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell around our station.

Seth plucked a maple bar top with bacon and cake donut with sprinkles from the box, making me smile. I’d wondered who would snag the sprinkle one. The guys thought they were hilarious, as well as delicious.

“Titan will be annoyed that you took the sprinkled one,” I teased.

“Why do you think I claimed it?” Seth asked. “Last time I managed to snag a maple with bacon, he snuck up to my desk and took the bacon off before I could eat it. The jerk. This is revenge.”

I released a peal of laughter. Geez, it felt amazing to laugh. I’d been one massive ball of tension since yesterday.

“All right, I have to get going. Have a good lunch.”

We parted, and I briefly considered shoving another donut into my face before passing through the station’s doors. Ultimately, I decided against it. I needed to hit the gym, not continue eating crap. Not that I was against sweets or indulgences. I just knew that my body worked better without so much sugar. Hence why I’d given up my beloved soda years ago.

I sighed. So many sacrifices. Let’s hope that I can figure all this out and make the sacrifices worth it.
