SIXTEEN

Hunt and I exchanged looks. Bridgestone took several folded papers from his inside jacket pocket and handed them to Hunt, who unfolded them for us both to read. The first one was the same document Judy had sent me.

“This is the same document,” Hunt said, slightly confused, then moved on to the next paper. His gaze slid to me. The second document was some type of correspondence between the Reno bank and the firm. My heart stopped when my eyes landed on the signature at the bottom of the letter. I’d recognize that signature anywhere. It was Dave’s. I looked up at Bridgestone who was staring at me, no doubt anxious to see my reaction to this bombshell. The smug look on his face told me that he was enjoying watching me squirm.

“Where did you get this?” I demanded. “There’s no way Dave was involved with this!” I snatched the letter from Hunt to take a closer look at it.

“I’ve been talking with Beryl and he mentioned that he was checking into the possibility that the Reno Securities Bank and Trust was heavily involved with some questionable clients. I did some checking on my own and came up with this info. I’m sorry, Glory. I know you wanted to protect your husband’s memory, but the reality is, people aren’t always who we think they are. You may have to accept the fact that he was the Fishetti family’s mole in the firm.”

“Are you saying that you actually believe he was some kind of double agent? That he was telling the FBI one thing, and doing another?” I practically screamed. “You are crazy!”

Hunt placed his hand over mine. “Let’s just reserve any accusations until we have proof of his involvement.”

“What more proof do you need?” Bridgestone slammed his hand down on the table. “His name is on Island Ventures correspondence to the Bank in Reno. Looks pretty obvious to me.”

“Why haven’t you returned any of my calls, John?” Hunt asked. “I’ve left several messages. Seems like you’ve been intentionally leaving us out of the loop on your part of the investigation.”

“Absolutely not.” John took the last swallow of his beer. “I knew how this would upset Glory and I was waiting until I got to town to tell you in person. I didn’t think it was the kind of thing to drop on you over the phone. And I knew you would want to see the physical evidence.”

“You said you saw Judy and Paul Johnson arguing in the parking lot. What do you think it was about?”

“At first, I thought Johnson was the connection to Fishetti. But after this little discovery,” he looked at me and tapped his finger on the document lying on the table, “my guess is that she was in on it with your husband. Johnson found out about it and confronted her. Maybe even fired her.”

I clenched and unclenched my fists as Hunt placed his hand on my knee under the table trying to keep me calm.

“I don’t believe for a minute that either Dave or Judy were involved in this.
