Chapter 13

The music thumped, the crowd roared, hands groped at his arms and shoulders, but Rodrigo was oblivious to it all. He was too busy running through all the possible scenarios in his head. He knew Bretten was not going to win. The old adage anything can happen in a fight was true 99.9% of the time, but not this time. Bretten was coerced into losing on purpose, and under the circumstances he couldn’t be blamed one bit.

The procession toward the cage felt dreamlike to Rodrigo, like nothing was as it appeared, and he guessed it wasn’t. Unfortunately, nobody would be woken up from this dream.

He scanned the crowd, wondered where the danger lurked, and struggled to maintain the facade of concerned corner man, concerned for his fighter’s well-being, not for something outside the cage.

His mind raced. He questioned if there really were dangerous killers nearby, if he should have called the police, if Brooke would be alright.

Bretten was in the cage and he and Whit were on the apron.

Rodrigo found Brooke standing in the third row. She anxiously rubbed her stomach as if trying to get her nerves to settle, and blew a kiss to Bretten. Rodrigo saw him return the gesture, and then look squarely at Bear. He seemed sick next to Brooke. His face a ball of knots, clenched jaw, hard eyes. Even the lines in his forehead seemed set, as if they were etched in concrete.

Rodrigo averted his gaze and turned to his friend. Coach Whit had just finished delivering last-minute instructions and Rodrigo offered advice of his own that didn’t contain a hint of Bruce Lee. “Do what you have to do.”

He hopped off the apron and searched the arena for something, anything, even though he knew it was futile. The crowd settled for a split second, and Daniel McCoy yelled, “Let’s fight!”

Eck and Dean exchanged knowing glances. “This ought to be interesting,” Dean said.

Eck nodded and looked at Bear. He stood a few steps away, both hands clasped under his chin and he chewed on his knuckles. Eck rolled his eyes and almost felt pity for him. The man seemed to hold on to a shred of hope.

Dana and Sherry focused intently on the men in the cage. They clinched, and the Brazilian Silva let loose some vicious knees to Bear’s fighter. The fans groaned with each blow, and this pulled Detective Westingham’s eyes away from the crowd and onto the fighters. He’d positioned himself behind Dana and Sherry’s section in an attempt to take in his surroundings, especially the two men named Eck and Dean.

“Dammit Bear, he’s not following the game plan at all,” Brooke said. “Moving slow, too.”

Bear didn’t look away from the action, but stopped chewing on his knuckles long enough to reply. “I know. He doesn’t look like himself tonight.”

The way he said it caught Brooke’s attention. It was as if he was almost relieved by Bretten’s subpar effort. She tore her eyes from the cage and took in Bear’s features.
