CHAPTER NINE
âCECE? Cece, are you home?â
âComing, Liza,â she called, recognizing her visitorâs voice and frowning slightly at the strident tone. âWhatâs wrong?â She pushed her hair behind her ears and ran her hands down the front of her cotton shorts before opening the front door and letting in a blast of humid, early-September heat.
âI need your help.â Liza was panting slightly, as if sheâd run all the way up the walk from the street. A battered old pickup was parked at the curb. âAt the clinic.â
âWhatâs the problem?â
âCome on, Iâll explain it in the truck,â Jeffâs sister urged, tugging at Ceceâs hand. âWeâve got work to do. And not a man in sight. Theyâre never around when we need them, are they?â
âLiza, what in heavenâs name is going on?â Cece demanded, setting her feet on the top step, refusing to be dragged off her motherâs front porch until she knew exactly what she was needed to do.
âYouâve got to help me clear the supplies and equipment out of the clinic. The landlordâs foreclosing. Weâve got twenty-four hours to come up with the back rent or heâs changing the locks on the doors.â
âThe clinic is being evicted? I didnât think the money problems were that bad.â
âBelieve me, they are,â Liza insisted.
âSurely if you talk to the man... Who is the landlord, anyway?â
âSome car dealer from Chicago. The clinic might be on the wrong side of the tracks, but the property is worth a lot of money. Iâm sure heâs trying to break the lease. Cliffâs in Madison, picking up replacement parts for the air-conditioning unit at Timberlake. I tried to get Byron and Nora to help but I forgot. Theyâre out of town on sort of a belated honeymoon,â she continued breathlessly. âJeffâs working a double shift in the ER tonight because itâs the holiday weekend and everyone else is off. Thereâs no one to get the stuff out but us.â
âSurely the clinic directors could try reasoning with the man....â
Liza gave her a scathing look. âCece, havenât you figured it out by now? There are no clinic directors. Itâs Jeff. Just Jeff. Itâs always been his project. Didnât the name give it away to you?â
âIâIâve never heard the name. Youâve always just called it the free clinic.â
âWell, itâs the Ronald Baron Clinic. Named after my dad. Jeff runs it. Staffs it most of the time. And pays most of the bills.â
Cece didnât know whom to be more angry atâJeff, for never telling her the truth, or herself, for not figuring out the obvious without having to be told. He had loved his father, mourned his death and what he felt was his dishonor. She should have known he would try to restore Ronaldâs place in Tylerâs esteem.
Liza was tugging at her hand again. âCome on. Itâs going to get dark early tonight. Itâs clouding up to rain. Weâve got to hurry.â
âIâve got some money in the bank. I could lend it to Jeff. Wouldnât that be easier?â
âDo you have five thousand dollars?â Liza asked, turning to start down the steps.
