Chapter Nineteen

News of an impending visit by Luke Fisher, the head of their parent company, had brought business matters in Bradford to a head. As they were discussing the scheme they had to put before Luke, Simon Jones dropped his bombshell. ‘I think it’s time I retired and passed the baton to someone younger and fitter — someone fitter, certainly.’

‘What does that mean?’ Sonny was shocked.

‘I’ve been struggling more and more with the pain from my injuries, it’s been getting worse over the last year or so. I’m afraid the way things are going I’ll not be strong enough to come to work regularly for much longer. In the interim, I plan to oversee the accounts department on a more part-time basis until you can find a replacement. When you do, I’ll ensure they know the ropes.’

They had to accept Simon’s decision as inevitable, but his going would leave a big hole in the management structure. Having determined there was no one suitable from within the ranks as they were not chartered accountants, Sonny and Jessica decided to consult with Luke Fisher during his visit before beginning the search for a new finance director.

Their Australian visitors were due to arrive in May and requests had been passed that they wished to visit all the sites under Fisher Springs’s ownership. Sonny told his co-directors that when they did meet, apart from supplying information, they should have an agenda of any of their concerns. ‘That way they don’t leave us in the dark.’

Josh had resolved the bank issue. Half a dozen bank officials involved in the embezzlement scheme were sacked. A couple of them tried to threaten the directors with court action, but Josh put a stop to that by showing them the evidence he held and gave them the option of going quietly or ending up in jail. After further investigation, he even managed to get some of the items from the bogus safety deposit boxes returned. Once he’d got that dealt with, Josh had been put in charge of clearing up the aftermath of the pollution disaster. Luke and Patrick decided he was a born trouble-shooter, something they were a bit short on.

As the date set for Luke and Isabella’s departure approached, Patrick spent more time pondering the problem of Elliot and Dottie’s continuing relationship. Elliot had settled in well at Fisher Springs and was already beginning to impress some of the divisional managers with his grasp of different aspects of what had become so diverse a company.

Patrick’s concern was how to make the separation of the lovers more effective. Although working in different territories, Elliot still managed to visit home when he could, thus defeating his parents’ intentions entirely. Patrick recalled hearing Luke’s parents telling him about their early days together and how circumstances had forced them to leave England and start a new life together in Australia. The pain of separation from their family and all that was familiar had been softened by them having each other to share the burden.
