“Who the hell are you?” he practically yelled. He let his wife go and started toward me reaching his hand behind him. I drew my pistol and aimed at his head. He did not hesitate, but pulled a pistol out of nowhere and I fired. I missed the first shot, but I have learned that one does not stop with the first round. I continued firing as he tried to avoid being hit by dropping sideways. He got off one shot, but it was wild. He fell to the floor, his pistol falling to his side. I turned the pistol on the other two. I knew I had only a few shots left and held back from shooting them.

The woman was screaming words I could not understand and posed to go to her husband, but her father-in-law held her back. She looked at me with wild eyes and disbelief in her face, still yelling and cursing at me.

“You mother fuck of a shit. I’ll kill you. I’ll fucking kill you!”

“Don’t even think about doing that!” I warned her.

She stood trembling beside her father-in-law. I walked to the body, looking at them all the while. Picking up his pistol and quickly walking aside. She ran to dead husband, knelling over his still body. She reached out to touch his face, but stopped short as his face was bloodied from the gun shots. Her expression said it all. I could see that she was afraid of me, but didn’t understand why her man had reached for his gun, and I could see it was the same expression in her father-in-law’s face. He walked over to her, taking her hands, pulling her up to stand behind her.
