CHAPTER 15

Seconds later, Tiff and I were in a black SUV speeding out of Moon Lake toward Abracadabra.

"Who laughed?" Tiffany asked. "Where is Mr. Crane? Will he be all right? And who is the he, Mr. Crane said was here?"

"And is the he who was there, the serial killer?" I asked.

Stash turned in his seat. “Ma’am, this is my assessment. Powerful dark energy entered the room at the speed of a laser. The energy laughed at us.”

“Wow, that’s super helpful, Stash,” Tiff said.

“I state the facts.”

Tiffany leaned forward to look Stash in the eyes while Eagle drove. "What will happen to Mr. Crane? Did it take him, or did he disappear to save himself?"

"I don't know," Stash said. "Mr. Crane is a legend in the Lighter’s Community. Both scenarios are possible. The best thing we can do is get you two home."

The speed limit on this road was fifty. Our SUV had to be doing ninety. Trees blurred by.

"Are we safe at home? If it got to us in the bookstore. It can get to us anywhere, can't it? When you say you have your sisters in a secure location, how can you know that? How can Grace, Pete, and Link, know that the Collins Trio are safe? If the dark energy could get to them in the bookstore, how can they be safe anywhere?" I asked. "I think I like human villains better. At least you can lock your doors."

I swore Eagle took that corner on two wheels. Tiffany and I both swayed left and were forced to hold on. A cold chill radiated in my spin. Tiff grabbed my hand. She felt it too. A vision flashed for less than a nanosecond in my mind.

"In-Between," Tiff and I yelled at the same time. I grabbed Stash with my right hand. Tiff snatched Eagle's arm. Together we dove into the In-Between and pulled our bodies out of the car and into a deep ravine on the side of the road. Eagle's legs got caught in the seat belt. Stash dove back through and yanked on Stash’s leg. I held my breath. Tiff squeezed my hand. Imagine the loudest thunder you've ever heard, magnified by one thousand. The ground shook so hard, two trees toppled.

"Eagle," I screamed.

"Stash, Stash, where are you?" Tiffany cried.

The tree above us rattled. I looked up. Both men climbed down as Tiffany, and I crawled up the ravine and onto the side of the road.

The cows in the pasture across the street gathered in the corner farthest away from us. Old Mr. Willis, in his denim blue Studebaker, pulled to a stop.

"Everyone okay?" He opened his truck door and extended a hand to Tiff and me as we tried to stand. My legs shook, but I managed to stay upright. Tiffany wrapped her arms around me. Mr. Willis kept his hand on my back. Sirens sounded in the distance.

Someone must have heard the explosion and called in an emergency. The SUV was reduced to puzzle piece size.
