Although Lewis was an atheist when he began college, most of his friends were some brand of Christian or other. J.R.R. Tolkien was one of his closest friends. They shared a passion for learning, and both wrote fantasy books. Yet, their friendship went beyond the merely academic. They were great personal friends throughout their adult lives.

Early in his career at Oxford, Jack joined a group formed by J.R.R. Tolkien called "The Coalbiters." The group discussed Icelandic mythology. Later, an undergraduate named Edward Tangye Lean started a group called "The Inklings" around 1931 at University College, Oxford. The group functioned the same way current-day literary critique circles do. The members brought unfinished works to the meetings and read them aloud. When one read, the others commented on the writing, asking questions, pointing out deficiencies, and pointing out passages that worked well.
