Sebas showed me to their room in the inn. Before Sebas could even knock, Remily flung the door open and pulled me inside.
âYou have a guest, Reinbach!â she announced.
Reinbach, looking as healthy as he had last year, was seated on a couch with another man of his age, apparently mid-conversation. They both turned to us with surprise.
âGreat to see you again,â I stammered out.
âIs that you, Ryoma? Youâve grown a bit since I last saw you in Gimul. What brings you here?â Reinbach asked.
âCoincidence. I came here as part of my training, and I was surprised to spot a Jamil carriage. Then...â My eyes floated to Remily, and Reinbachâs and his guestâs followed.
âLooked like you knew each other so I brought him up here,â she said, omitting more than a few details of our encounter.
Naturally, explanations about how Reinbach and I knew each other and how Iâd ended up here followed. Apparently Reinbach was vacationing with friends, accompanied by Sebas.
âI have been made aware of what transpired in Gimul at the end of last year. I regret that we left you to deal with the evil we had allowed to fester thereâbut I thank you for it nonetheless. For helping my son and his wife in their endeavors,â Reinbach said. The first half of his statement was filled with deep sorrow and regret, and the second half with genuine gratitude. How greatly Reinbach must have been troubled by those events, I could not imagine. Since Reinbach was already retired, it was up to Reinhart to take on any challenges the Jamils faced. Regardless of what had caused those problems, if Reinbach were to overstep and involve himself too much, the other nobles might have seen that as weakness on Reinhartâs part. As much as it must have pained him, Reinbach had to take a backseat for the long-term benefit of his son and family as a whole. Still, he toed the line, only helping from the shadows.
âThanks to your efforts, the restoration of the city went smoothly,â I said.
âAh, that makes my heart feel lighter,â Reinbach answered. âOh, these two played some part in that, too. I have worked with them long enough to trust them with anything. They are both well-respected and were great assets in that regard.â
âThank you for that,â I said.
âNo need to thank me. Reinbach is helping me out in return,â said Remily.
The man sitting beside Reinbach, Sever Gardock, replied, âA knightâs duty is to serve the people. Doubly so at a friendâs behest.â As it turned out, he was the former captain of the Knightsâ Order that Reinbach had recommended I hire to guard the laundry shop. During introductions, Sever explained that heâd retired, feeling the weight of his ageâthough his powerful frame gave the impression of anything but feebleness. He was clearly a skilled fighter, but he wasnât intimidating. Not that I had wanted an intimidating introduction, but I had always pictured the captain of a Knightsâ Order to conduct himself with such gravitas; it was a relief to find him not so.
